De Nava’s Three-Hitter Moves CBU into Friday’s Semifinal

STEPHENVILLE, TX --- California Baptist, the top seed in the 2026 Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Softball Tournament, is on to the semifinal round. Back by Miranda De Nava's 15th complete game of the year, and a late-inning insurance run, the Lancers topped Utah Valley, 3-1.
De Nava, the WAC Pitcher of the Year, is now 18-7. She allowed one run, which came in the top of the first inning, on only three hits. She struck out five across her seven-inning performance, moving her single-season record up to 169.
Utah Valley scored that first-inning run courtesy of a passed ball, but the Lancers were unfazed as CBU avoided the shutdown inning with two runs in the bottom half. The rally kicked off with two outs when Kenzie Farrier-Pilon singled, followed by a single from Makayla Medellin. Ashlee Annett then drove them in with a two-run double.
The Wolverines threatened to level the score in the fourth when they led off the frame with a triple, but De Nava followed up the hit with a shallow fly ball and two strikeouts to strand the run at third.
CBU added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth thanks to a two-out single from Sydney Peterson to plate Medellin. Peterson finished the game 2-for-3. Farrier-Pilon, Annett, and Medellin also racked up two hits each in the win.
Thursday's victory gives the Lancers the remainder of the day off, as they watch to see who they will play next. The game of interest will be 2-seed Tarleton State taking on 6-seed Utah Tech. The winner of that game will advance to Friday to square off with CBU for a spot in the championship round.
Friday's semifinal matchup is scheduled for 10 a.m. (PST) and will be streamed on ESPN+.
