IRVINE, Calif. — In its second PacWest matchup of the season, No. 9 California Baptist University got a chance at redemption against Concordia University of Irvine. The two had split the weekend before in Riverside, but the Lancers couldn't get much-needed runs Saturday in Irvine to fall 2-0 and 4-2.
The losses drop CBU to 16-6 overall, 1-3 in conference. CUI improves to 25-4 on the year, 8-2 in the PacWest.
CBU could only get two hits off in the opener, but that didn't stop the Lancers from putting runners on base. That one key hit just didn't come, however, as CBU left seven runners stranded to drop the game 2-0.
Ashley Coleman put in good work in the circle in game one, striking out five batters and only allowing three hits to the Eagles.
The Lancers looked to turn things around in the finale, scoring their first run of the day in their first chance at the plate. Krista Mann — only one of two batters to get hits in the first game — led off with a bunt single to third. Jacque Lopez moved her to second on a base hit down the left field line, before Erin Burkhart doubled to center to score Mann.
Despite the early hot bats, CBU couldn't keep the run going as the Eagles took the next three batters down in order to end the inning down 1-0.
CUI took over the lead, 2-1, in the bottom of the second, plating two runs on two hits. The Eagles extended that to 4-1 in the fifth off a two-run homer, putting pressure on the Lancers to score runs.
The visitors looked like they might get what they were looking for in the sixth. With two outs, London Miller drew a rogue pitch to the body to get a free ticket to first. Tayler Castro took over the running for her and was joined on base by Sarah Murphy with a single up the middle. Soraya Shahbazian then stepped up to the plate and knocked a base hit to center, loading the bases.
Unfortunately for the Lancers, CUI got out of the jam with the next out to hold onto its 4-1 lead.
With one last chance to put some runs on the scoreboard to keep the game going, CBU entered the seventh determined to send runners home.
Jordan Mowatt led the inning off with a single to the gap at right center and advanced to second on another Lopez single. Burkhart then grabbed her second RBI of the game, blasting another double to give Mowatt the green light to round third and slide safely past the Eagle catcher.
It was the only run CBU would score, however, as the Eagles sealed the 4-2 win to take the series 3-1.
CBU looks to bounce back on the road, heading north to the Bay Area for an eight-game swing. The Lancers first take on non-conference foe San Francisco State on Tuesday for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m., before three PacWest doubleheaders to complete the trip.
