IRVINE, Calif. – Ten was the magic number Wednesday as No. 23-ranked California Baptist University women's water polo trounced the Eagles of Concordia Irvine in a 14-2 victory, moving to 16-5 overall and open the Golden Coast Conference with a 1-0 mark. The Eagles drop to 0-12 on the year, 0-3 in conference.
CBU remains unbeaten in 10 games after winning the first GCC match of the season against conference newcomer Concordia. It was also 10 Lancers who combined for the 14 goals in a team-driven performance.
"Today was a great first conference win," Head Coach Jon Miller said. "It was nice to be able to rotate everybody in the second half and get quality minutes from our bench. Finishing with 10 different goal scorers shows our depth and how much balance we have."
Two-meter senior Hannah Evans led the scoring charts for the match, collecting four goals with one assist, one steal and one drawn ejection to her name.
"Hannah had a solid first quarter and really set the tone on the offensive end early," said Miller. "That helped to open up other opportunities around the pool."
Sophomore Allie Coleman put in an excellent shift today, scoring two goals and adding one assist to the team's onslaught of goals. Eight other Lancers scored one goal each, solidifying the win in their first GCC game of the season.
CBU was defensively sound as goalie Meghan Rowland gathered 14 saves on the day, leading her team from the back with a commanding presence. Rowland showed her quality as a keeper, making two big penalty saves in the second half.
"On the defensive end, everybody played really well one-on-one and limited Concordia's good looks at the cage," Miller stated.
Next up for the Lancers is the ASU Invitational where they will challenge the likes of Pomona-Pitzer, New York's Marist College and host No. 9 ranked Arizona State University. The invitational will prove to be no easy feat for the Lancers, but they enter the tournament with great confidence after a long stretch of stellar performances.
