SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Faced with a four-goal deficit at halftime, 22nd-ranked California Baptist University needed a miraculous comeback to knock off Golden Coast Conference-leading and No. 14-ranked San Diego State Friday on the road.
While it did not result in a win, the Lancers certainly put the heat on SDSU at the Aztec Aquatic Center before falling, 7-5. San Diego State locked up the top seed for the GCC Tournament, which it will host April 28th to May 1st, as it improved to 14-14, 6-0 in conference.
Meghan Rowland and Laura Kocsis came through with monster performances for CBU's defense and offense, respectively. Rowland produced 12 saves and five steals, and Kocsis scored two goals and added two steals and an assist. Hannah Evans tied Kocsis with a game-high two goals, while also grabbing three steals and drawing five ejections.
CBU can secure a top-three seed with a win over conference-rival Azusa Pacific on Senior Day, next Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Lancer Aquatics Center. Before that, the Lancers face ninth-ranked UC San Diego in La Jolla Saturday at noon.
San Diego State closed out the first half on a 3-0 run to take a daunting 6-2 lead over CBU at the break. The Lancers had little hope of victory at that point, but would score the next three goals to pull within one with 4:25 to play, making the Aztecs sweat.
CBU's offensive charge would start with a Rowland save and outlet pass at the other end. Kocsis was on the other side of the pass, and she turned her defender beautifully and then lobbed a shot cross cage for the goal to make it a three-goal deficit, 6-3, less than a minute into the third.
After being swarmed defensively all game, Evans worked quickly at two-meter for a backhanded goal with 40 seconds left in the third. The Lancers won the third quarter, 2-0, and kept building on their momentum in the fourth.
About halfway through the quarter, CBU drew an exclusion and Paizlee Dreyer worked a pass inside to Courtney Menard, who one-timed the shot to make it a one-goal game with 4:25 to play.
SDSU broke its more than 14-minute scoring drought with 2:12 to go on a powerplay goal. With time running out, the Aztecs chose to stall out the game and squeak out the win.
It was a defensive battle to start, with San Diego State scoring the first two goals of the game 6:16 into the action. Kocsis brought CBU's deficit down to one twice in the first half. The senior opened the scoring for the Lancers with 42 seconds to play in the first quarter when she cashed in a six-on-five opportunity.
The second quarter opened up as Kocsis tipped away an Aztec pass over to Evans. From there, Kocsis and Evans worked a beautiful two-on-one counter, with Evans pushing in a Kocsis pass to make it a 3-2 deficit less than a minute into the second.
