SANTA CLARA, Calif. – No. 22-ranked California Baptist University women's water polo grabbed a vital 8-5 win over Santa Clara to keep its quest for a first-ever Golden Coast Conference Championship and a berth to the NCAA national tournament alive.
The Lancers record now jumps to 20-8 and 4-1 in conference play and will put them in a tie for second place in the GCC by the end of the day. Both No. 18 San Diego State (4-0) and Pacific (3-0) are undefeated and were playing Saturday afternoon.
Utility Laura Kocsis and two-meter Hannah Evans each scored hat tricks to help fuel their team to victory. Kocsis also collected three steals, one drawn ejection and one block, while Evans drew four ejections and made one block. With her three goals on the day, Evans is now two goals shy of breaking the 100 goals marker for the second consecutive season.
Driver Valerie Spezzaferri notched two goals and earned one steal on the day. In the cage, goalkeeper Meghan Rowland saved 10 crucial shots and made five steals to keep her team in the lead.
Evans got the game rolling with a goal in the first 30 seconds of action. The Broncos responded with two goals to take the lead, 2-1, but Kocsis evened it up 2-2 with just under six minutes to play in the first quarter. With a minute left, Santa Clara snuck in another goal to hold a 3-2 edge after the first period.
Something sparked for CBU in the second and third quarters as the Lancers went on a scoring tear. Kocsis started the 4-0 run, with Evans scoring two and Spezzaferri chipping in another to put their team in front 6-3.
The Broncos scored their first goal since the first quarter with just over three minutes left in the third, but CBU entered the final period looking to seal the win.
Kocsis found the back of the game on a penalty goal a minute and a half into the quarter, before Spezzaferri capped the scoring a minute later. Santa Clara would score one more goal, but it wasn't enough to overpower the Lancers as they took the game 7-5.
CBU heads to San Diego State next, which could prove to be the deciding factor for the Golden Coast Conference Championship. The matchup takes place April 15th at 4:00 p.m.
