PRINCETON, N.J. – After starting the season out against the top competition in the country, California Baptist University started to roll this weekend.
The Lancers improved to .500 with lopsided wins over Connecticut College and Fordham at the Princeton Tournament on Saturday. CBU opened with a 25-7 win over Connecticut College in the morning and then doubled down in a 14-7 win over Fordham in the evening.
At the end of the trip, CBU finds itself at 3-3 and on a three-game winning streak. Connecticut College opens the year at 0-2 and Fordham falls to 3-2.
Despite the final 18-goal margin of victory, the Lancers were up one, 4-3, at the end of the first quarter against Connecticut College. They ran away with the second quarter, 8-1, to take a 12-4 advantage into halftime.
If that wasn't impressive enough, CBU saved its best for last by winning the fourth quarter on a score of 9-1. Thirteen of the Lancers' 15 active field players scored in the game. Dominick Nevarez scored a team-high four goals, while Ryan Sargis and Elad Gunya added hat tricks of their own. Kyle Johnson, Brent Teraoka, Teddy Forte, Logan Mena and Caleb Rogers all had two goals each.
Ball movement was key to all the goals, with 15 of CBU's goals combing by way of assist. True freshman Tyler Strabel notched a team-high three assists, while Nevarez, Tanner Shore and Royce Daniel LaVerne had two apiece.
Defensively, the Lancers created all those scoring opportunities, with 12 forced turnovers. Mena came away with four steals and Shore had three, as well. Matt Miller got the start in the cage and saved more than half of the shots he saw, with eight in all.
A day after becoming CBU's career-record holder for saves, Joseph Moorman kept Fordham out of the cage most of the night, with a season-high 19 saves. Teraoka led the offense with four goals in the game, while Forte and Gunya scored twice in the game.
The Lancers took a 5-2 lead at the end of the first quarter against Fordham and upped their lead to five, 8-3, by halftime. For the second period in a row, CBU held its opponent to just one goal to take an eight-goal lead, 12-4, into the fourth quarter.
