Tying With the Eagles

LA MIRADA, Calif. — In the first of three games in six days, California Baptist University battled 110 minutes with Biola, but settled for a 1-1 draw on the road.
The Lancers, who still sit atop the PacWest standings, move to 9-4-1 overall and 7-1-1 in conference. The Eagles stand 9-3-2 overall, 5-3-2 in the PacWest.
"I believe we played well tonight, controlling the game, executing our match plan and certainly well enough to win the game," said Coach Kristen St. Clair. "Road games are always difficult and we ran into quite a bit of adversity tonight. However, it was a good opportunity to see how we respond under pressure and I believe we did a very good job responding to that adversity and focusing on the things we could control. We got a little unlucky on the finishing end hitting the post and their keeper made some good saves."
It was a high-octane game with both teams firing off over 20 shots. The Lancers out-shot the Eagles 28-to-23, but Biola put 10 shots on goal, compared to CBU's nine.
CBU got the first look on frame when Hoku Afong made the Biola goalkeeper make a save, but the Eagles turned right around to pressure the Lancer defense and make Sara Escobedo make one of her nine saves in the game.
The Lancers took four shots on goal in the first 22 minutes, before finding the back of the net in the 24th minute. Brooke Ligtenberg scored the lone goal for CBU, firing off a shot from just outside the 18-yard box. It took a slight deflection, but stayed on target past the goalkeeper to put the visitors up 1-0.
Jordan Dow looked like she might give CBU some insurance in the 56th minute, but her shot off a corner kick hit the crossbar. Desarae Felix followed up with a shot that was just wide, keeping it 1-0.
The insurance would have come in handy since Biola evened things up in the 84th minute off a scramble in the box.
It pushed the game into extra time, with CBU hoping to find the golden goal. Felix had a couple chances in the first period, but one was blocked and the other was saved, keeping it 1-1 after 100 minutes.
Lanai Navarro hoped to be the hero in the 104th minute, but once again the Eagle goalkeeper came up big.
Less than a minute later, it looked like Biola might get the unthinkable over the Lancers, but Mariya Fefilova kicked it off the line to keep the game going.
With less than a minute left on the clock, Felix got in behind the defense, but missed just wide. Time expired before CBU could get another chance to finish the game deadlocked at 1-1.
"While we would have liked to pick up three points tonight, we still picked up an important point going into the final stretch of the season," said St. Clair. "We'll learn the lessons from this game and go back to work tomorrow to focus on our next opponent, Holy Names."
The Lancers return home for two last games, hosting Holy Names on Thursday and Academy of Art on Saturday, both with 12:30 p.m. kickoffs.
