RIVERSIDE, Calif. — After only holding a 1-0 lead at halftime, California Baptist University came alive in the second half to dominate a 5-0 victory over Holy Names Thursday afternoon.
The Lancers regained their top spot in the PacWest standings, sitting 10-4-1 overall and 8-1-1 in conference. The Hawks leave Riverside still looking for their first victory of the year, holding a 0-13-1, 0-8-1 mark.
"The team did a great job in the second half to respond with top execution on both sides of the ball," said Coach Kristen St. Clair.
CBU out-shot HNU 25-to-6, including a 12-to-3 shots on goal edge.
Not even four minutes into the game, CBU was on the board. The Lancers were awarded a corner kick, where Brooke Ligtenberg sent it into the box. It went through the 18-yard box, all the way to the far post where Rebecca Romero took a touch and fired off a shot into the back netting of the goal, 1-0.
"Rebecca did a great job on the flank, consistently playing dangerous balls into the box for quality scoring opportunities," St. Clair said.
"I honestly just focused on taking a good first touch – like we've been working on in practice – and I saw the left side of the goal wide open, so I took my shot," said Romero. "It was also a beautiful cross in from Brooke!"
Despite many more chances in the first half, CBU walked into halftime only up 1-0.
Knowing Holy Names is a dangerous team to keep in the game, the Lancers came out looking for some insurance in the second half.
"We knew HNU was better than its record indicates," said St. Clair. "We started the game with sharp execution of our match plan, got on the board quickly, but did not finish the first half as sharp as we should have."
They got their first insurance goal in the 52nd minute when Ligtenberg found Jordan Dow wide open at the far post. Dow rocketed off her shot across the face of the goal to extend CBU's lead to 2-0.
Almost exactly three minutes later, the Lancers had a 3-0 lead, this time Ligtenberg getting on the other end of a goal. Miranda Martinez laid off a through ball, which Ligtenberg popped up and volleyed in her shot, 3-0.
Freshman Chloe DeMoes scored her first collegiate goal in the 82nd minute when she drew a penalty kick and converted it with ease, 4-0.
"Chloe did a great job beating her defender to draw the PK and score her first collegiate goal," said St. Clair.
Less than four minutes later, Desarae Felix found the back of the net. The junior had been attacking all day, but tucked in a shot to the near post off an assist from Mariya Fefilova to cap the scoring at 5-0.
The Lancers have one last home game, hosting Academy of Art on Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
"This was a strong team win," said St. Clair. "We'll go back to work tomorrow to prepare for AAU."
It's one of CBU's last three games in the regular season before the selection show airs on Monday, Nov. 6. The Lancers were the No. 5 team in the last NCAA Division II West Region rankings and need to be one of the six teams called on the selection show for a berth to the postseason.
