LA MIRADA, Calif. – As it has been for the past several years, California Baptist University's season opener gave Coach Rick Rowland a chance to focus solely on his relay teams to see what works.
Plenty worked for the Lancers on Friday at the PCSC Relays at the La Mirada Splash Center, as they won five events and also got to see its depth pay off in other areas, including in diving. CBU tallied 128 points to take first place in the six-team standings, with Fresno Pacific right on its tail with 121, while Azusa Pacific took third with 84. There is one more day left in the PCSC Invite, with Saturday made up of pentathlon events.
CBU found winning formulas in the 200 and 800 and 500 (50, 100, 150, 200)-yard freestyle relays, as well as the 3x100 backstroke and breaststroke relays. Mackenzie Mergel and Grace Oeser both swam on the first-place 200 and 800-freestyle relay teams, which clocked in with times of one minute, 39.97 seconds and 7:47.27, respectively. Taylor Dowden and Robin Smallwood also swam on the 200 free, while Alex Wolf and Christie Halverson added to the victorious 800 quartet.
Oeser swam on the victorious 3x100 backstroke team, along with Andrea Laliena and Emily Longfellow, as well. The trio clocked in at 2:57.11. Smallwood and Wolf teamed up with Melody Coleman in the 3x100 breaststroke and nailed a 3:20.62.
CBU's fifth win came in the 500 (50, 100, 150, 200) freestyle, with a time of 4:44.03. Dowden, Smallwood and Halverson made up the winning team with Tessa Olson.
Runner-up finishes came for the Lancers in the 400-medley, 4x100 individual medley and 3x500-freestyle relays. Mergel, Wolf, Longfellow and Peter swam the 400 medley in 4:02.33; while Wolf, Coleman, Laliena and Longfellow finished the 4x100 IM in 4:05.82 and Halverson, Olson and Mergel touched the wall in 15:47.07.
Halverson, Smallwood, Oeser and Ariahn Givens turned in a third-place time of 3:39.42 in the 400-free relay. The Lancers' 3x100 butterfly relay grouping of Peter, Longfellow and Hannah Parson also took third in 2:58.45.
On the diving end of the pool, Millie Moro and Savannah Uhlir finished third and fourth, respectively, on both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards. Moro tallied point totals of 219.65 and 211.85 at one and three-meter, respectively, while Uhlir notched 204.25 and 197.25.
