RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Less than 24 hours off its five-point victory to open the new season, No. 14-ranked California Baptist University turned around and grabbed a huge 98-69 win over Cal State L.A. on Saturday.
The Lancers move to 2-0 on the year, while the Golden Eagles drop to 1-1.
Five Lancers finished the night in double figures led by Gabe Taylor. The senior transfer finished with a career-high 20 points off 6-of-7 shooting, including a perfect 2-for-2 from beyond the arc. Kalidou Diouf wasn't far behind with 18 points (7-for-9), while Cory Lange posted 16 points, Jason Todd finished with 14 points and freshman Ty Rowell scored a career-high 10 points.
CBU shot and moved the ball well, finishing with a 47.1 shooting percentage and 21 assists, with Todd and Rowell each dishing out five.
For the second night in a row, the Lancers crushed the effort off the glass, boasting a +22 rebound margin (53-to-31). Diouf was just one board shy of a double-double, grabbing nine rebounds on the night. Todd followed with eight rebounds, while also finishing with a career-high four steals. De'jon Davis contributed seven rebounds as well.
While the opening five minutes were pretty back-and-forth, CBU found its groove with just under 15 minutes to go in the first half and went on a 12-0 run to jump in front by 11. Down 9-8, Rowell drained a three after Todd stole the ball away to force a quick Cal State L.A. timeout.
The regrouping didn't help, however, as Lange and Taylor (two) knocked down back-to-back-to-back triples to put CBU up 20-9.
Cal State L.A. tried to scrap and pulled within five, 30-25, but the Lancers had another response. Four-straight points from Diouf sparked an 11-2 run to give CBU a good 14-point cushion with just under two minutes before halftime. Diouf accounted for eight of the points, while Rowell rattled in a trey for the other three.
In the second half, the Lancers got some more separation in the last nine minutes of the game. After Cal State L.A. scored a layup to pull within 72-57, Jordan Heading drove to the basket, followed by four free throws – two from Taylor and two from Diouf – to push CBU's lead just on the brink of 20 points.
The Lancers broke that barrier and more, with Micah Robinson putting the final dagger in off an arching triple from the corner off a Danny King assist, 98-69.
CBU remains at home for a 7:00 p.m. tip off against Colorado Christian on Wednesday.
