RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Tipping off a week of thanksgiving Tuesday night, No. 7-ranked California Baptist University grabbed an 85-50 victory over Western New Mexico.
The Lancers remain undefeated in the CBU Events Center with a 5-0 mark, while the Mustangs drop to 1-4 on the young year.
"It's a cool feeling [to play in the Events Center]," said Jason Todd. "It's cool to see the community come out even when students are away on Thanksgiving break. We love playing in front of our fans and anytime we can get a win, we love doing that."
Kalidou Diouf led with 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting, while Todd wasn't far behind with 15 points (6-for-10). Cory Lange chipped in 12 points and two assists, while De'jon Davis was just one point shy of double figures with nine points (4-for-9).
"It was a good win," said Diouf. "They came out strong and really tried to push the ball at us today, but we kept our poise. We made sure we defended well and came out with the win."
Off the glass, the Lancers dominated with a 62-to-40 margin (which was three boards shy of the program's single-game record), led by Diouf's 10-rebound effort to give the big man his first double-double of the year. Todd and Matt Hubbard each followed with nine boards (a career-high for Hubbard), while Gabe Taylor snagged seven missed shots for CBU.
After exchanging points in the early goings, CBU put a 13-0 run together to take its first significant lead of the night, 19-4. Ty Rowell (four assists) knocked down the first three-pointer of the night, before Lange and Todd followed with back-to-back treys to cap the spurt.
"Defensively, we just locked in," said Todd. "If we can get stops and put them together, it gets us hyped. Then we can get easy buckets in transition and make everyone's life easier."
WNMU managed to cut the spree briefly with a basket in the paint, but CBU scored six unanswered points to increase the home team's lead to 19 points, 25-6.
The Lancers kept rolling and surpassed the 20-point margin with eight minutes left in the period, but the Mustangs tried to battle back. The visitors pulled within 14, but a dunk from Davis sparked a 9-0 spurt to give the Lancers a 39-16 cushion.
Momentum carried into a 42-18 advantage at halftime and continued to build as CBU came out of halftime on a 10-2 run. Back-to-back triples from Taylor and Todd forced a WNMU timeout, with the visitors trailing 52-20.
CBU got hot from three, shooting almost 50-percent at one point to threaten a 40-point lead, 67-30, with under 12 minutes remaining.
The 40-point lead came with 7:25 left on the clock as Rowell grabbed an and-one. He completed the old-fashioned three-pointer to give CBU a 78-39 cushion.
Heading down the stretch, the Lancers kept the Mustangs at a good distance and closed out the 85-50 victory.
CBU remains at home, hosting Missouri S&T Friday and Saint Martin's Saturday for the Ayres Thanksgiving Classic. Both games tip off at 7:00 p.m.
