ST. GEORGE, Utah — Despite cooler weather, No. 18-ranked California Baptist University kept hot with an 8-2 win over Metropolitan State University of Denver, but dropped a close 4-3 loss to 19th-ranked Colorado Mesa Friday at the Easton Classic, hosted by Dixie State.
CBU sits 4-5 on the year, while MSU Denver drops to 4-4 on the year and CMU improves to 6-1.
The Roadrunners capitalized first in their first chance at the plate, taking a 1-0 lead, but CBU responded in the bottom half of the frame. Krista Mann and Soraya Shahbazian both hit aboard before an MSU Denver error allowed Mann to even the score at 1-1.
CBU came alive in the third, scoring four runs on five hits. Halle Rosario and Mann knocked back-to-back base hits, before Shahbazian sacrificed a bunt to advance the pair. London Miller sent the duo home with a two-RBI single, before Caitlyn Lloyd caught the home run bug and drilled one over the fence in dead center, 4-1.
MSU Denver got a solo homer in the top of the fourth to cut the score to 4-2, but CBU didn't stop from there as the Lancers tacked on three more runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Rosario drew ball four and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Mann. Shahbazian then gave her the green light to round third and tag home with a base hit. Miller then took her spot in the batter's box and blasted her fifth homer of the weekend to put the Lancers in front 8-2.
The Roadrunners kept the game from ending early and even scored one last time before CBU sealed the 8-3 victory.
Iveth Alvarado picked up her first win of the year, while Ashley Coleman came in on relief in the sixth and struck out two batters to secure the win.
CBU found itself trailing 2-0 early in the nightcap, but Lloyd had a response in the top of the second. The freshman turned on a pitch and sent it sailing over the fence just right of center to cut the score to 2-1.
The Mavericks took back their two-run lead in the third, 3-1, but once again the Lancers responded. With Shahbazian at third and Miller at second, Hannah Thieroff grabbed an RBI single to put her team back within one, 3-2.
Momentum kept building for CBU as the Lancers took advantage of another CMU error to tie the game at 3-3.
The Mavericks looked to take the wind out of CBU's sails by plating a run in the fifth and didn't allow the Lancers to come back, ending the game 4-3 in favor of CMU.
CBU has one last game at the Easton Classic, taking on local foe Cal State San Bernardino Saturday at 2:00 p.m. Pacific.
