Getting a Fresh Start

LAS VEGAS — Despite starting five freshmen, No. 18-ranked California Baptist University looked like its usual self in its first game of the 2017 season. The Lancers exploded to a 15-1 mercy rule victory over Concordia University of Portland, but faced back-to-back ranked opponents in their next two games. CBU dropped an 11-7 slugfest to No. 14 Central Washington and fell 8-3 to fourth-ranked West Texas A&M.
The Lancers open the year 1-2, while CWU starts 1-1 and WTAM begins with a 2-0 mark.
Ciara Stapp put together a solid start in the circle for CBU in her collegiate debut against Concordia, allowing just one run – which was not earned – and two hits, while striking out two Cavaliers in three innings. Iveth Alvarado relieved the freshman for the final two innings of the game, allowing just one hit while striking out two.
After a quiet first inning in the opener, the Lancers jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the second. Caitlyn Lloyd (6-for-10, three runs, two RBI, 90-percent slugging on the day) led the frame off with a double down the right field line before Ali Subia (4-for-10, four runs, three RBIs on the day) joined her on base. The pair then touched home as Brittany Galvez (5-for-12, three runs, four RBIs on the day) doubled to left center.
The Cavaliers managed to get an out, but CBU kept swinging. Deanna Alarcon (6-for-10, two runs, two RBIs on the day) put runners on the corner before Erin Burkhart tripled to right to score both, 4-0. A Concordia error then sent Shaye Felix – who had walked on – and Galvez in before the Cavaliers could end the inning, trailing 6-0.
Concordia responded in the bottom half of the inning, plating one run on one hit, 6-1.
The Lancers would have two more big innings to secure the early victory, scoring five runs in the fourth and four in the fifth.
Subia started the scoring spree off in the fourth with an RBI base hit. Galvez repeated with an RBI single, before Amanda Springstead doubled to plate two more runs. Alarcon capped the inning by sacrificing a foul ball as Galvez tagged up from third, 11-1.
With the eight-run rule win already in place, CBU just needed to secure the fifth to take the early victory. The Lancers didn't let up, however, scoring four more runs to grab the 15-1 win. Alley Johnson, Jennifer Kolander, Ashley Van Why and Subia all scored in the frame.
Against the Wildcats, CBU opened with the first run of the game as Alarcon singled up the middle to score Lloyd in the second.
CWU responded with two runs in the top of the third, but the Lancers took back their lead in the bottom half of the frame.
Despite two outs on the board, Lloyd gave CBU new life as she tripled to right to score Soraya Shahbazian to even the game up, 2-2. A fielding error gave Lloyd the green light to run home and give the Lancers back the lead, 3-2.
The Wildcats came back in the top of the fourth, scoring two runs on four hits.
Once again, CBU had a response in the bottom inning. Alarcon scored as a Wildcat threw away the ball to allow Burkhart to move to third. Burkhart then came home on the next play as Shahbazian knocked down a base hit.
The Lancers capitalized on more Wildcat errors to hold a 7-4 advantage through four complete. It didn't last, however, as CWU came alive in the fifth to take an 11-7 cushion and never looked back for the win.
In the nightcap, CBU faced some adversity early on and found itself trailing 6-0 after four complete.
The Lancers broke their drought in the bottom of the fifth as Shahbazian drove in Johnson with an RBI single, 6-1.
WTAM scored two more runs in the sixth to threaten a run-rule victory, but the Lancer defense held on to give CBU hope for a comeback attempt.
It came in the sixth as Johnson sacrificed a ground ball to score Subia. Burkhart then took advantage of a WTAM error as Galvez put CBU within five runs.
The Buffs wouldn't allow any more of a comeback, however, taking the game 8-3
CBU will look to bounce back with two more games tomorrow. The Lancers first take on Stanislaus State at 2 p.m., before facing Chico State – which is receiving votes in the coaches' poll – at 7 p.m. to conclude the tournament.
