WHITTIER, Calif. — No. 25 California Baptist University continued to build its win streak with two victories on the road this weekend at the Whittier Open. The Lancers faced host Whittier College and Pomona-Pitzer, grabbing 13-8 and 11-6 wins, respectively.
To open the day, the Lancer offense relied heavily on seniors Paizlee Dreyer, Valerie Spezzaferri, and Jessica Castellano. The powerhouse trio contributed eight of the Lancers' 13 total goals.
"In the first game we had a tough first half defensively, but our offense was clicking really well," said Coach Jon Miller. "The seniors really stepped it up when we needed them to, all with multiple goals."
The Lancers struck first with a goal in the first two minutes of the game from Spezaferri. However, the Poets found the back of the cage less than a minute later to tie the game. From there, it was back and forth for the rest of the first half. CBU kept its lead with another goal from Spezzferri, along with points from Dreyer, Lizette Perez, Jaclyn Myers, and Castellano to end the first half leading 8-7.
The offensive spark eventually dulled for the Poets due to the Lancer defense only allowing one goal in the second half. CBU outscored Whittier 5-1 in the second half, with goals from Dreyer, Perez, and Castellano. Junior Amy Bideshi added to the scoring frenzy in the fourth period, scoring two goals herself. The steady offense and the heightened second half defense allowed the Lancers to secure the win 13-8.
CBU carried over momentum into the nightcap when the Lancers faced Pomona-Pitzer College.
"We really emphasized getting a good start and we were able to set the tempo and put away shots early," said Miller.
Castellano was the first Lancer to find the back of the cage, followed by true freshmen Chase Kelly and Perez to give the Lancers a 3-0 lead.
The Sagehens responded in the second period, but it was not enough to catch the Lancers. The first half ended with a score of 7-3, continuing the morning game's offensive success.
Pomona-Pitzer opened the second half of play with a goal to make it 7-4, but goals from Pua Wong and Perez kept CBU's lead more than alive. The Sagehens looked for one final push in the fourth period, but it would not be enough to beat the Lancers, who finished the game with two more goals from Castellano and Perez, thus giving the Lancers their second win of the day and third in a row with a score of 11-6.
The Lancers stay on the road this upcoming week, with games in Redlands against Cal State Northridge and Redlands on Feb. 16th at 2 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., respectively.
