Lancers Out Slug Seasiders

LAIE, Hawaii – One inning into Friday's first game, it looked like California Baptist University and Brigham Young University-Hawaii could be in for a slugfest. The Lancers were the only ones who kept slugging from then on, however, to sweep the Seasiders on Friday.
CBU defeated BYUH via the mercy rule on a 13-2 score through five innings in game one and then used the full seven to post a 5-1 win in the day's finale. The Lancers have now won 14-straight games and hold a two-game lead atop the PacWest standings with a 22-7, 16-2 conference record. BYU-Hawaii drops to 10-20, 7-11.
Thanks to several impressive performances on offense, CBU never trailed on Friday. Soraya Shahbazian played a big part in that by going 5-for-8, with four runs batted in, on the day. Deanna Alarcon (3-for-5), Brittany Galvez (3-for-6) and Caitlyn Lloyd (2-for-5, four RBI) also had at least one hit in both games for the Lancers.
There are two more games left in CBU's Hawai'i road trip at BYU-Hawaii Saturday. The final doubleheader of the trek begins with a 3 p.m. first pitch on Saturday.
In game one, Krista Mann sparked CBU's first-inning, three-run outburst with a leadoff single. Shahbazian drove Mann in with a double into right center and Galvez blasted a two-run homer to put the Lancers in front, 3-0, immediately.
There was no time for CBU to slow down, as the Seasiders responded with a two-run bottom of the first. Back at the plate, Alarcon singled aboard and gave way to Alley Johnson on a fielder's choice. Johnson then stole second and Mann walked onto first. Lloyd cleared the bases with a double to make it 5-2 Lancers.
Kellye Springstead would not allow another BYUH run in the five-inning complete game, while CBU's offense kept working toward the mercy rule. The sophomore pitcher allowed just the two runs, while striking out four in the victory.
London Miller started the third inning with a double, moved to third on a wild pitch and then came home on a sacrifice fly from Galvez.
In the fourth, consecutive singles from Johnson, Mann and a walk to Lloyd loaded the bases with no outs. Shahbazian and Miller each brought a runner home, with a sacrifice fly and single, respectively.
CBU saved its best for last and scored five runs in the fifth, despite having its first batter pop out. An error, hit by pitch and walk to Mann loaded the bases with one out. Lloyd was plunked to bring a run home, and Shahbazian and Miller drove in two each, with a respective double and single, to cap the scoring in the first game.
Overall in game one, Mann went 2-for-2 with four runs scored and a stolen base out of the leadoff spot. Johnson helped turn the lineup over in the nine hole and scored three runs and stole three bases in the game. Both set the table for the likes of Miller (3-for-4), Shahbazian (2-for-3), Lloyd and Galvez, who all had at least three RBIs in the opener alone.
The Lancers came out and scored first again, with three runs in the second inning, of Friday's finale. Erin Burkhart, Amanda Springstead and Alarcon all singled to load the bases. Mann sacrificed Burkhart home with a fly to center field and Lloyd singled through the right side to drive in one and score another after an error in right field.
CBU struck for three more in the fifth. Shahbazian, Galvez and Burkhart loaded the bases with singles and Amanda Springstead drove in two more runs with a single up the middle.
Shahbazian (3-for-4), Galvez (2-for-4), Burkhart (2-for-4), Amanda Springstead (2-for-3, two RBIs) and Alarcon (2-for-3) all had multiple hits in game two.
Ciara Stapp was strong in the circle again for the Lancers, allowing just one unearned run, while striking out eight to earn her eighth victory and improve to 8-3.
