LAIE, Hawaii – It may have been just a mid-season PacWest game on the schedule, but California Baptist University celebrated its doubleheader sweep of BYU-Hawaii with an ice-water bath of Coach Bill Baber on Saturday.
When the Lancers swept the Seasiders 6-0 and 14-1 (five innings) on Saturday, it did much more than put two more wins on their record. It gave CBU a perfect 10-0 record on its Hawai'i road trip for the first time in program history. It also pushed the Lancers' winning streak to 16 games, improved their record to 24-7, 18-2 in conference and kept their two-game lead in the PacWest standings. BYU-Hawaii drops to 10-22, 7-13 this season.
Even more than that, it showed how far the Lancers have progressed this season for Baber.
"They just keep getting better and they're really playing for each other now," Baber said. "We've talked a lot about that all season, talked about it even more on this trip. We're seeing that more and it's bringing the team closer. I really think that showed and that's why we went 10-0, we couldn't have done it without people doing it together."
Both CBU pitchers tossed great games on Saturday. Ashley Coleman picked up the shutout in the opener, striking out eight batters. Iveth Alvardo gave up just one run and struck out six over five innings to end the road trip.
CBU came out and scored two runs in the first inning of the game. Krista Mann coaxed a leadoff walk and scored on a double to left center field from Caitlyn Lloyd. Soraya Shahbazian put runners at the corners with a single into the outfield, and London Miller put the Lancers up 2-0 with a sacrifice fly to left field.
After two scoreless innings, CBU scored again in the fourth. A Brittany Galvez single, walk to Erin Burkhart and Hannah Thieroff single loaded the bases with no outs and Deanna Alarcon drove Galvez in for a 3-0 cushion.
The Seasiders put on their best rally in the bottom of the fourth, with two walks and a single in the inning. Ali Subia kept the shutout intact, however, as she scooped up the single in right field and beat the runner at home for the final out of the inning.
The Lancers carried over that momentum in the sixth and scored on a leadoff homer from Thieroff and then on consecutive two-out doubles from Mann and Lloyd. The 5-0 advantage was not enough, as CBU scored again on back-to-back singles from Thieroff and Alarcon in the seventh. Overall, Thieroff was 4-for-4 in the game, while Lloyd, Shahbazian and Alarcon all had two hits in the game.
In the series finale, CBU scored in the first inning again. Lloyd drew a one-out walk and hustled over to third on a Shahbazian double. Lloyd scored on a sacrifice fly from Miller for a 1-0 edge until BYUH tied it in the bottom of the first. Singles from Amanda Springstead, Alarcon and a Mann two-run double broke the tie and gave CBU a 3-1 lead in the second inning.
The Lancers erupted for 10 runs on six hits in the third inning. Shahbazian was hit by a pitch to start things off, while a fielder's choice and Galvez single loaded the bases with no outs. A walk to Burkhart brought in the first run, while Subia drove in two with a single and another hit by pitch reloaded the bases without an out.
A full-count walk gave Alarcon an RBI and a double from Mann brought in two more runs. Lloyd then cleared the bases with a three-run homer before Ashley Van Why bashed a two-run single to up CBU's cushion to 13-1. Shaye Felix capped the scoring in style by hitting her first career home run in the fifth inning.
Nine different players logged hits in the finale, with Mann going 2-for-3, with two doubles and four RBIs, and Shahbazian was 2-for-2 with a double.
"It was a lot of fun for them and that's why you saw the excitement in the end," Baber said. "We had girls coming off the bench ready to go when their name was called."
