RIVERSIDE, Calif. – California Baptist University was solid on both sides of the ball Tuesday night, grabbing 13-0 and 8-0 shutout, run-rule wins over Holy Names.
The Lancers improve to 10-7 overall, 4-2 in the PacWest, while the Hawks drop to 1-14, 1-11.
Kellye Springstead gave another solid performance in the circle, tossing a no-hitter while striking out nine batters and conceding just one walk in the opener. Ciara Stapp followed with another shutout victory, allowing just one hit in five innings on the rubber. The true freshman struck out six batters, while Iveth Alvarado came in on relief and kept up the defensive dominance.
Things started fairly quiet in the opener, with CBU scoring just two runs in the bottom of the second. With bases loaded and one out, Alley Johnson drove in two runs with a base hit to center field.
The Lancers exploded in the third, plating nine runs on five hits and one error. It didn't look good for the Hawks early as CBU loaded the bases with no outs and walked in the first run, 3-0.
Erin Burkhart then knocked down a base hit to score two more runners, before Hannah Thieroff tucked in a double down the left field line to make it 6-0, still with no outs.
Everyone in the Lancers' lineup scored in the third, making it 11-0 before HNU could find the third out.
Sydnie Trostle came in as a pinch hitter in the bottom of the fourth and turned on her pitch for her first career hit, sending it sailing over the fence at left center to add some insurance. Diana Gomez capped the running by taking advantage of an error to make her way to third and tagged up on a sacrifice fly, 13-0.
The Lancer defense held firm behind Springstead to seal the 13-0 run-rule win in just 4.5 innings.
CBU didn't waste time in the nightcap and jumped out to a 2-0 lead in its first chance at the plate. Krista Mann (2-for-5, three runs, three RBIs) led off with a double and then Soraya Shahbazian drilled a home run to give the Lancers the two-run lead.
Caitlyn Lloyd (3-for-5, two runs, three RBIs) got the third inning going with one of her three doubles on the night, before Brittany Galvez send her home with a base hit to deep left center.
The Lancers came out hungry in the fourth, scoring three runs to threaten another run-rule victory. The first two runs came on sacrifice fly balls from Mann and Shahbazian, before an infield single from London Miller put CBU in front 6-0.
HNU tried to keep the game going, holding off the Lancers in the bottom of the fifth, but the Hawks couldn't extend the game to seven innings.
Deanna Alarcon led the sixth off with a single to left, allowing Mann to seal the deal with a home run over the fence just to the left of center, 8-0.
The Lancers will look to keep momentum building in their favor, hosting Dominican University of California on Thursday for a doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 5:00 p.m.
