Out-Jumping the Sharks

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — After a close battle Saturday night, No. 24-ranked California Baptist University didn't look tired Monday night. It came in handy as the Lancers pulled away in the second half and held on for a 73-60 victory over Hawai'i Pacific.
CBU improves to 14-3 overall and 7-2 in the PacWest, still a half game behind the top spot – Azusa Pacific and Dixie State sit in first place with 8-2 conference marks. HPU drops to 9-7, 4-3 in conference.
Off the glass, CBU – which ranked eighth in rebounding margin in NCAA Division II going into the game – out-jumped the Sharks 38-to-30, with Kalidou Diouf leading the charge with seven boards. Heading followed with six rebounds, while Bul Kuol contributed five boards.
Jordan Heading led with 17 points (7-for-14), while also leading the team with five assists. Diouf and Cory Lange each chipped in 14 points, with Diouf shooting 7-for-11 and Lange posting a 5-for-9 shooting night, including 4-for-7 from the perimeter. Kuol was just outside scoring in double figures with nine points on the night.
CBU opened on an 8-2 run to take an early lead. Heading scored the first points of the night when he drained a three from the top of the arc, followed by a Kuol layup to make it 5-0 early.
HPU managed to battle back and tie the game up 18-18, but Matt Hubbard and Lange knocked down back-to-back treys to keep their team in front, 24-18. The Sharks responded, but CBU scored six unanswered points to force an HPU timeout, 30-20.
Lange started heating up from distance, hitting his third three-pointer of the night just 18 seconds before halftime to put CBU up 33-25 at the break.
Just about halfway through the second half, however, HPU tried to make a push and pulled within two, 45-43. After some quick back-and-forth action, Heading drilled a triple and a jump shot to create some separation back, 50-43.
Heading went off on a 7-1 run by himself, before De'jon Davis got in on the scoring spree to put CBU up by double-digits, 54-44, with just about eight minutes left to play. He added a tip-in before Lange went off on a breakaway after stealing the ball to extend the run to 11-1.
The Lancers seemed to be in their groove, building a 16-point lead, 68-54, with just under three minutes left on the clock. It started with a three from Heading, before the Australian stole the ball away and found his fellow Aussie on a fast break, allowing Kuol to slam it home. Gabe Taylor capped the run with two free throws to all but seal the deal, 68-52.
HPU tried to put together a last-ditch effort, cutting the margin to 10 (68-58), but Kuol banged in two free throws and Lange drilled another three to lock in the 73-60 victory.
The Lancers head out on the road for a pair of games, before returning to the CBU Events Center on Feb. 1 as they host Concordia University of Irvine. CBU first has to travel to the Eagles' lair, taking on CUI on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
