RIVERSIDE, Calif. — In front of a packed CBU Events Center, No. 24-ranked California Baptist University came out strong to grab a 96-59 victory over Biola Saturday night.
The Lancers improve to 19-4 on the year and 12-3 in the PacWest with their fifth-straight victory in front of a crowd of over 4,800 people. The Eagles drop to 10-14 overall, 4-12 in conference.
Four Lancers finished the night in double figures, with two on the cusp, as CBU shot 54.5-percent from the field.
Kalidou Diouf led CBU with 26 points in 22 minutes, shooting 10-for-13 and dishing out five assists. Cory Lange chipped in 13 points (6-for-10), while Jordan Heading (4-for-9) added 12 points and a game-high seven assists. Matt Hubbard rounded out the quartet with 10 points (4-for-9), while Ty Rowell (3-for-6) and De'jon Davis (3-for-4) each finished with nine points.
Off the glass, the fourth-best rebounding margin team in NCAA Division II dominated once again, out-rebounding the Eagles 41-to-25. Diouf had eight boards, while Hubbard snagged five.
CBU opened on a 15-2 run, fueled by four-straight points from Diouf and a triple from Bul Kuol off a Diouf assist. The Eagles scored to stop the spurt briefly, but Diouf sparked eight-straight points with a layup in the paint to give the Lancers the 13-point cushion.
"It was a great environment, electric atmosphere," said Coach Rick Croy. "The guys were sharp on both ends. We were fortunate they missed a few early looks, but we got off to a good start offensively and took care of the ball."
It didn't slow down from there.
After Biola cut the margin to 15 points (25-10), CBU took off on another run, scoring 11 unanswered points, 36-10. Heading got the ball rolling by draining a triple off a Gabe Taylor assist. Diouf (two layups), Lange (dunk) and Hubbard (layup) also got in on the scoring during that span.
With just seconds before the buzzer sounded, Rowell rattled in a three to put CBU up by 30 points at halftime, 49-19.
Biola seemed to have talked about the adjustments it needed to make at the break, opening the second on an 8-2 run, but CBU built back its 30-point lead about halfway through the second half on back-to-back threes from Heading and Rowell – both assisted by Diouf.
The Lancers coasted from there, even threatening a 40-point lead with under four minutes to go off a Hubbard trey, 93-57. The senior sealed the 96-59 victory with a triple for his team.
CBU has two last home games left in the regular season, hosting Hawai'i Hilo on Tuesday for a makeup of what would have played out in Hawaii. The Lancers then take on Chaminade on Thursday, with both games tipping off at 7:00 p.m.
"We're trying to stay in the moment, but you blink and the next thing you know it's time to make a run [at the postseason]," said Croy. "That's what we're trying to do. We want to make sure we enjoy and make the most of our time together and hope that parlays onto the court."
