RIVERSIDE, Calif. — No. 20-ranked California Baptist University made adjustments at halftime and came alive in the second half to grab a 90-76 victory over Chaminade, despite trailing by five at halftime.
The Lancers – who have already secured their fifth-straight PacWest Conference Tournament berth – improve to 21-4, 14-3 in the PacWest. It keeps the Lancers right on Dixie State's tail, sitting a game and a half behind the top spot in the conference. Chaminade drops to 14-10, 9-8 in conference with the loss.
"Tonight was a lot of fun and shows the kind of team that we are," said Gabe Taylor. "It really came down to us getting after it and competing as brothers. That's what this team is all about."
Jordan Heading was on fire, shooting 50-percent (12-for-24) to finish with 29 points, just two shy of tying his career high. He almost made it a double-double, dishing out seven assists on the night, while only turning the ball over once.
Three other Lancers finished with double-digit points, including Cory Lange, who chipped in 16 points. Kalidou Diouf finished with 14 points on 50-percent shooting (7-for-14), while Taylor added another 11 on a 4-of-5 performance from the floor, including 3-for-4 from three-point range. Matt Hubbard put in a solid showing, finishing with eight points (3-for-6) and tying Diouf with a team-high seven boards.
"I just try to come off the bench and bring as much energy as possible," said Hubbard. "Just try to do whatever I can for the team. I was able to have some success tonight and it was a lot of fun."
While CBU shot well in the first half (45.7-percent), it hit its stride in the second, going 52.5-percent from the floor, including almost 45-percent from the perimeter.
Things were pretty even in the first half, with Chaminade just barely holding a 45-40 lead over the Lancers at halftime with a .2-percent advantage on shooting.
CBU opened the second half with back-to-back buckets, cutting the score to 45-44. Chaminade scored a free throw, but Heading found a wide-open Taylor in the corner to easily knock down a three to put CBU in front 47-46.
The Silverswords managed to take back the lead, but Ty Rowell rattled in a triple to tie the game up 58-58 with just over 12 minutes to go. Hubbard then kept Chaminade off the glass and put CBU back on the attack, allowing Heading to drain a trey, 60-58.
It turned momentum in CBU's favor as Rowell and Heading hit back-to-back shots from the perimeter to force a Chaminade timeout with the Lancers holding a 68-60 cushion.
CBU didn't let up from there as Cory Lange hit a deep three to keep the 11-0 run going in the home team's favor. The Lancers didn't allow the Silverswords to score for almost four minutes, meanwhile building up a double-digit cushion, 76-62, with under eight minutes left on the clock.
The Lancers had taken the wind out of the Silverswords as it headed down the stretch with an 84-68 cushion.
Chaminade tried to put a run together, cutting the margin to 12 points, but it was a little too late as Heading grabbed a steal and laid it in to secure the 90-76 victory.
After boasting an 18-1 regular-season home record, CBU heads out on the road for its last three regular-season games. The Lancers don't get much of a turnaround, taking on Fresno Pacific on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. CBU then closes out the regular season in the Bay Area the following week, hoping to head into the PacWest Conference Tournament – which the Lancers will host in the CBU Events Center – with momentum.
