Making It Rain
2/13/2018 8:54:00 PM | Men's Basketball
RIVERSIDE, Calif. — After Hawai'i Hilo's gym's was unsafe to play in back at the end of November – too much water – the game was rescheduled in Riverside. No. 20-ranked California Baptist University made it rain in a different way, shooting almost 50-percent from the perimeter to grab an 88-55 victory.
The Lancers improve to 20-4 on the year, 13-3 in the PacWest, with their sixth-straight victory. CBU currently sits in second place in the conference standings, one-and-a-half games behind Dixie State (17-6, 14-2 PacWest). The Vulcans drop to 6-17 overall, 5-11 in conference with their fourth-straight loss.
As a team, CBU shot 54.8-percent from the floor, including 45.8-percent from three-point range.
Four Lancers finished the night in double figures, led by Jordan Heading's 20 points on an impressive 70-percent shooting (7-for-10), including 80-percent from beyond the arc (4-for-5). Kalidou Diouf (8-for-14) and De'jon Davis (6-for-11) each contributed 16 points on the night, with Cory Lange chipping in another 12 (4-for-6). Ty Rowell was just on the brink of double-digits, finishing with nine points.
CBU, which ranks fourth in NCAA Division II in rebounding margin, dominated the glass yet again 45-to-27. Davis led the Lancers with 10 boards to complete the double-double. Diouf followed with seven, while Heading was one away from his career high, finishing with six boards.
The Lancers opened on a 5-0 spurt after Lange knocked down a three in the first possession of the game. Lange then stole it away from the Vulcans in their first chance at the basket, allowing Bul Kuol to drive to the basket on the other end of the court, 5-0.
UHH managed to take the upper hand, 14-10, but the Lancers responded with another five unanswered points to jump back in front. Lange sparked the run with another triple from the left side and Diouf grabbed a defensive board before laying in a Rowell assist, 15-14.
CBU tried to get some separation, taking a 36-30 lead off a Rowell trey, but the Vulcans managed to chip away to a one-point margin, 36-35. It was the last the Lancers would let them score as the home team closed out the half on a 5-0 run to take boast a 41-35 cushion at halftime.
The Lancers shot almost 53-percent (9-for-17) from the perimeter in the first half alone, with Heading boasting a perfect 4-for-4 performance from beyond the arc.
Momentum carried over into the second half as Diouf and Lange found open lanes to the basket to give CBU its first double-digit lead of the night, 45-35, less than two minutes into the half.
It seemed the Vulcans started to lose steam as the Lancers continued to push tempo and threatened to go into 20-point margin territory, 59-42.
Diouf put CBU over that edge with just over 10 minutes left on the clock, showing off some fancy footwork before swishing in a fade-away jump shot, 66-45. Gabe Taylor followed by banking in a close shot to put the Lancers up by 23 points.
Heading down the stretch with a 22-point cushion, CBU coasted to the 88-55 victory to secure a perfect record against Hawai'i Hilo (11-0 all-time). CBU finished the second half out-scoring the Vulcans 47-to-20 after holding UHH to 26.7-percent shooting, while shooting over 60-percent itself (20-for-32).
The Lancers close out the regular-season home schedule on Thursday, hosting Chaminade at 7:00 p.m. CBU will honor six seniors – Kalidou Diouf, Jason Todd, Danny King, Cory Lange, Gabe Taylor, and Matt Hubbard – prior to tipoff.
