Lancers Bash Mavericks for Split

A disastrous seventh inning for the third-ranked Mavericks fueled the sixth-ranked Lancers to an 8-1 victory on Saturday at Totman Stadium. It secured a series split for CBU as it improved to 7-3 and CMU slid to 8-4 on the year.
Andrew Bash keyed the Lancers' win on Saturday, as the redshirt sophomore went eight strong innings on the mound. The right-handed pitcher allowed just six base runners (four hits, two walks), one unearned run and struck out five to pick up his second win of the season. Ryan Silva continued his impressive freshman season with a scoreless ninth inning.
"This one was really big, going 2-2 really shows where we are at and what we need to work at," Bash said. "Overall, we fought and battled."
Bash retired 10-straight at one point, putting CMU down in order in the fourth through sixth innings and then did so again in the eighth.
"I just wanted to throw strikes and trust my defense to get my outs and do what I needed to do," Bash said. "The location on my fastball was good to do, I was able to rip off my slider when I needed to, too."
CBU out-hit Colorado Mesa 49-29 in the series and enjoyed a 13-4 advantage on Saturday. DJ Porter was 3-for-4 at the plate, while Luke Navigato, Tommy Bell (two doubles) and Ryan Mota all went 2-for-5. John Glenn was 2-for-4 with three runs batted in, three more scored and a home run.
"The offense has been doing really well this series," Porter said. "For us to come in and split four games with the number three team in the country – we will take that. Bash came in and did exactly what we needed him to today for us to get the win."
This 11-game home stand wraps up next week when the Lancers open PacWest play versus Holy Names. The series begins Friday at 5 p.m. and continues with a 10:30 a.m. doubleheader on Saturday before concluding Monday at 6 p.m.
"This series against a top-five team shows what we can do and what we need to work on going into conference, which is huge," Bash said.
Glenn's solo home run got CBU on the board first in the fourth inning on Saturday. The Mavericks tied the game with an unearned run in the seventh, but the Lancers responded and batted around in the bottom of the seventh.
Four walks and four singles brought in the runs for the Lancers. Billy Rockefeller drew a pinch-hit, four-hit walk to start the inning and Navigato singled before a Bryce Macy walk loaded the bases with no outs.
Glenn coaxed a four-pitch walk to score the first run and consecutive singles from Mota and Ryan Williams scored runs and kept the bases loaded. A walk to Harrison Spohn and two-out single from Angelo Capolupo added two more runs to end the scoring in the inning.
Bell scored in the eighth inning after he doubled with one out and came around on a Glenn single. A Mota single and Williams walk then loaded the bases for a sacrifice fly from Porter that capped the scoring at 8-1.
