Taking the Offensive

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Less than 48 hours after its last matchup ended, California Baptist University came out fired up and grabbed a 93-67 victory over Notre Dame de Namur Saturday night.
The Lancers improve to 17-4 overall, 10-3 in the PacWest with their third-straight win. The Argonauts drop to 5-14 on the year, 4-10 in conference.
"Overall, we want to be the aggressor, bring the energy," said Coach Rick Croy. "We have a group of guys who really enjoy competing together and that was the case tonight."
CBU shot extremely well, finishing with a 63.8 shooting percentage as a team and five Lancers scoring in double figures. Over the past three games, CBU has out-scored its opponents by an average of 16 points.
Kalidou Diouf led with 26 points on an impressive 12-for-14 performance shooting, including two three-pointers.
"Kali is a great offensive player, but he's really rounded his game out," said Croy of his big man. "He's worked hard at the other aspects of his game. He's become a much better defender and a dominant rebounder. I'm really, really proud of him. He prepares well for each game and the CBU jersey means a lot to him."
Ty Rowell followed with 15 points (5-for-8) to tie his career-high points. Gabe Taylor was on fire and didn't miss a single shot (5-for-5) to chip in 12 points. De'jon Davis also added 12 points (6-for-9), while Jordan Heading chipped in 11 points (4-for-6).
"We need everyone to keep getting better," said Croy. "It was a fun night. I don't think we've scratched the surface of what kind of offensive ball club we can be. We need to keep chipping away at it. Tonight was a step in the right direction. Definitely well to play well, especially with the community support tonight."
Once again, CBU – which ranks sixth in NCAA Division II in rebounding margin – dominated the glass, out-rebounding NDNU 34-to-19. Diouf, who ranks 48th in total rebounds per game and 25th in defensive rebounds per game, finished with 10 boards for his eighth double-double of the year. Davis contributed six rebounds on the night, as well.
The Lancers opened with the first points of the night and never looked back.
Heading drained a wide-open three to put CBU in front by double-digits and force an NDNU timeout.
The Lancer defense held firm, allowing its offense to go off on a 15-0 run to threaten a 30-point cushion, 37-10, with just under eight minutes left in the first. Ty Rowell knocked down three triples over the span and Heading capped the run with a fast-break layup off a Diouf assist.
Diouf caught fire, knocking down a wide-open three just minutes before the break to extend CBU's lead to 25. The Lancers forced a turnover on the next possession and Rowell hit two free throws to put CBU up 48-21.
NDNU scored before time expired to send the teams into halftime with the Lancers up 48-23.
Less than three minutes into the second half, CBU looked like it might break the 30-point threshold as Bul Kuol drained a three-pointer from the corner, 57-29.
The Argos managed to cut the deficit back into the teens, 63-44, but only briefly.
Diouf sparked 10 unanswered points for CBU with a layup off a Heading pass, before back-to-back three-pointers from Cory Lange and Taylor gave CBU back its separation. Diouf capped the run by finding an open lane to put the Lancers up by 30 (83-53) and force an NDNU timeout.
The Lancers closed out the remaining seven minutes strong to seal the 93-67 victory.
CBU continues at its back-to-back-to-back action, hosting Academy of Art on Monday at 7:00 p.m.
