CARSON, Calif. – A back and forth season opener went against California Baptist University Thursday as host Cal State Dominguez Hills won game one of the 2018 season on a 5-4 walk-off.
Home runs from Ryan Mota and Bryce Macy led the sixth-ranked Lancers, while Luke Navigato joined Macy by going 2-for-5 at the plate on the day. John Glenn, Andrew Bash and Ryan Williams also had base hits in the game.
CBU opens the year 0-1 and the Toros are 1-0, with the Lancers hosting CSUDH at Totman Stadium on Friday at 6 p.m. The three-game series concludes back in Carson on Saturday at 2 p.m.
After the Toros scored the first two runs of the game, the Lancers' offense broke through in the fourth inning. Mota got CBU on the board in his second at-bat of the game in the top of the fourth. The junior transfer from Riverside City College blasted a no-doubt, two-out home run to dead center field to cut his team's deficit in half, 2-1.
The rest of the Lancers' offense got going their third time through the order in the fifth inning. True freshman Harrison Spohn was hit by a pitch to start the inning and a sacrifice bunt from Angelo Capolupo moved him to second. Navigato doubled Spohn home to tie the game before Macy roped a two-run homer down the right-field line to give the Lancers their first lead of the season, 4-2.
Right-handed pitcher Dylan Stowell made his first appearance for the Lancers in over a year, getting the first start of the season. The redshirt senior allowed just one earned run and struck out three in the first 3.1 innings.
True freshman Jacob McCarvel made his collegiate debut on the mound out of the bullpen and did not allow a base runner in two-thirds of an inning. Andrew Bernstein threw the fifth through eighth innings for the Lancers, striking out six in four innings.
