Lancers Win In Front of Record Crowd

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – A standing-room only crowd helped set a new attendance record of 820 at Totman Stadium and fueled California Baptist University to victory in its home opener versus Cal State Dominguez Hills Friday night.
A three-hit performance from Bryce Macy, two-hit game from John Glenn and strong pitching from John Montgomery, Logan Rinehart and Ryan Silva put the Lancers over the top in a 5-1 win. The trio of CBU pitchers combined for 15 strikeouts, as sixth-ranked CBU and the Toros both find themselves with 1-1 records going into the series finale back in Carson Saturday at 2 p.m.
"It's a great feeling when all these fans come out and support and it's even better getting a W for them," Glenn said. "It's fun to get the first win of the season, it gets the nerves out of the way and I think we'll just keep rolling from here."
"The atmosphere was electric, it was just a good time, we were pumped to come out and get the win," Rinehart added.
Macy went 3-for-5 in the game, while Glenn was 2-for-4 with two runs batted in. Luke Navigato, Andrew Bash, Ryan Mota (RBI double), Ryan Williams (RBI double) and Rory Smith also had base hits in the game, with Smith – a true freshman – logging his first collegiate hit.
"There is a lot of depth, everyone on the team can contribute and drive in a run," Glenn said of the offense. "If someone is having a bad day, the next guy can pick him up."
Montgomery turned in a strong start for the Lancers, limiting CSUDH to one run in the first four innings. The junior struck out eight and walked just two on the mound to give his team momentum.
Rinehart earned the victory on the mound after he closed out the final five innings for CBU, giving up just two hits, no walks and striking out six. Silva, another true freshman, made his Lancer debut in the top of the ninth and was impressive, allowing just one hit and logging his first career strikeout to end the game in the ninth.
"My fastball location was good and my changeup was all right. I was just trying to get hitters up and down as much as possible," Rinehart said. "It was a little different, but I liked coming out of the bullpen, it's kind of nice not having to sit around and think before a start."
Cal State Dominguez Hills struck first in the top of the third, but its lead was short lived, as the Lancers scored three in the bottom half of the inning. It started with a one-out walk to Navigato and then a bloop single into center field off the bat of Macy. A walk to Tommy Bell then loaded the bases for Glenn.
The reigning PacWest Freshman of the Year took advantage and blasted a single through the right, past the second baseman to score both Navigato and Macy and give CBU a 2-1 lead. Bash added to the cushion with a sacrifice fly to first base, as the Toros failed to cover home on the foul out.
Two more runs scored for the Lancers in the fifth inning. Glenn got things going with a hard single through the right side, and a double into deep right center field from Mota scored him easily. Three batters later, Williams doubled down the left-field line to make it 5-1 CBU.
Montgomery did have to dance out of danger on the night, stranding runners in the first, second, third and fourth innings. An error and walk put Toros at the corners in the second inning, but Montgomery struck a batter out and Mota then made a nice sliding stop to his right to end the threat with an unassisted putout.
CSUDH took the 1-0 lead in the third on a one-out error and double, but Montgomery limited the damage and ended the inning with consecutive strikeouts. A leadoff single and one-out walk had the Toros threatening again in the fourth, but two strikeouts and a fly ball to right kept the Lancers ahead 3-1.
Rinehart had a 1-2-3 inning, with two grounders and a strikeout in the sixth, and then overcame a leadoff single and two wild pitches with three-straight strikeouts in the seventh.
