Putting in Extra Effort

HONOLULU — Looking to close out its Hawaiian getaway on a high note, No. 25-ranked California Baptist University grabbed its third-straight shutout in a doubleheader sweep at Hawai'i Pacific. The Lancers beat the Sharks 4-0 and 7-3 (in nine innings) Thursday.
CBU improves to 21-4 overall, 13-1 in the PacWest. HPU drops to 9-9 on the year, 4-8 in conference.
Unlike Wednesday's games, it took a couple innings for the Lancers to really get going.
In the top of the third, Cheyann Tucker and Anise Avalos got on base to start the inning, before Amanda Springstead drove Tucker in, 1-0. Caitlyn Lloyd singled aboard and Soraya Shahbazian walked to load up the bases with two outs. Hannah Thieroff kept her bat hot and doubled to right to send in two more runs, 3-0.
CBU capitalized again in the seventh after Lloyd led off with a double to left center and came home thanks to Shahbazian, 4-0.
Ciara Stapp and the Lancer defense held the Sharks in check in their final chance at the plate, sealing the 4-0 victory. Stapp finished with seven strikeouts in her seventh shutout of the year.
Lloyd led the nightcap off with a single through the left side in her first at bat and came through to score on an Ali Subia RBI single, 1-0. The Lancers loaded up the bases in the top of the second with two outs, but only managed to score one run to double their lead, 2-0.
HPU responded in the bottom half of the frame to take the lead, 3-2, but CBU tied it up in the sixth. Tucker walked to open the inning, before a Lloyd double sent her home, 3-3.
Neither team scored before the seventh inning ended, sending the game into extra innings.
Since there was a curfew rule on the field, where the game needed to end before 4 p.m. local time, there wouldn't be any innings starting after 3:30 p.m.
The ninth started just in time and CBU took advantage of it, despite going down two outs early. Shahbazian started a rally with ball four and Thieroff drilled a hard-hit single to the pitcher to put two runners on. The pair inched closer off a wild pitch, before Subia singled to center, allowing Shahbazian to score the go-ahead run, and Halle Rosario drilled a three-run homer for some insurance, 7-3.
Kellye Springstead kept the Sharks in check, striking out the first batter and sealing the win with two grounders. She finished with nine strikeouts and no walks in the victory.
The Lancers fly back to the mainland and head north for three games that were recently added to the schedule. CBU takes on Stanislaus State on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m., before facing Central Washington on Thursday for a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m. in Modesto, Calif.
