Strong Start from Stowell

HILO, Hawaii – Dylan Stowell turned in a dominant start for California Baptist University on Friday, but it was unfortunately not enough for the 11th-ranked Lancers as Hawaii Hilo won a 2-1 nail-biter at Wong Stadium.
Stowell threw a season-high 8.1 innings on the mound, without surpassing 90 pitches for the Lancers. He struck out 10 and walked just one, giving up just one earned run in the game.
CBU drops to 14-6, 7-3 in the PacWest and UHH improves to 8-10, 4-6.
Tommy Bell and Ryan Williams logged a team-high two hits in the game, with an extra-base hit apiece – a triple from Bell and double from Williams. DJ Porter logged the Lancers' other hit.
Stowell retired the Vulcans in order six times. He took a perfect game into the third inning when UHH took a 1-0 lead on three hits. Stowell regrouped and put Hilo down 1-2-3 again in the fifth through eighth innings.
In the middle of that, the Lancers scored to tie the game at 1-1 in the sixth. Bell started the mini two-out rally with a triple into the left field corner. He came around to score when Williams skied a high fly ball the first baseman misplayed, which allowed it to land in fair territory near the first-base line about 10 feet from home plate.
There were a number of great defensive plays to keep the score so low in the game. The Lancers continued to make good contact with their bats in the game, but sent a number of shots to the warning track or right at fielders who made quick reactions to record key outs.
CBU's defense was not to be overlooked, either. The middle of the infield continued to be tough to break through for opponents. Luke Navigato and Angelo Capolupo turned a double play that drew oohs and ahs from both sets of fans in the seventh inning.
UHH started out the inning with a leadoff single and then Stowell struck out Philip Steering, the team's top hitter. The Vulcans thought they had a hit on the next play with a grounder up the middle, but Navigato made a great diving stop behind second base, flipped to Capolupo and the shortstop turned it just in time for the inning-ending double play.
Hawaii Hilo did finally manage to score in the bottom of the ninth, with the help of two errors, two hits and a wild pitch.
