Lancers Dominate Opener from Eagles

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – One of its best offensive performances of the season led California Baptist University to a series-opening win over Concordia University of Irvine on Thursday at Totman Stadium. Jorge Valerio turned in a career-best start on the mound for the Lancers, as well, in the 14-0 PacWest win.
CBU matched its season high for home runs in a game, with three, and had its second most hits in a game this year, with 19, while Tommy Bell and Bryce Macy both finished one hit shy of a cycle. Valerio threw eight shutout innings for the longest outing of his career. The true freshman allowed just four hits, two walks and struck out seven.
"It was exciting, this is my second start of the season," Valerio said. "I was looking forward to getting out there, throwing strikes and doing whatever I could do to get the win for my team."
The Lancers improve to 17-10, 10-7 in the conference and the Eagles drop to 9-18, 6-11, with the series continuing Friday at 6 p.m. and wrapping up with a noon doubleheader Saturday in Riverside.
Nine different Lancers logged hits in the game, as they accumulated 19 in all. Bell and Macy led CBU as each went 4-for-5 at the plate. Bell added three runs batted in, three runs scored, a triple and home run to finish a double off the cycle, while Macy drove in four runs and finished a home run shy of the cycle with two singles, a double and triple. Andrew Bash also went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, two runs and yet another home run. Ryan Williams and DJ Porter both collected two hits for the Lancers.
"We were just trying to stay on this guy. We were trying to use the middle and hammer it if he tried to come in with it," Macy said. "This was a good win for us, we're going to flush this one and go to the next one and go game-by-game the rest of the year."
CBU took a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Williams started things out with a one-out double to left field and then tagged up at third on a deep fly to the center field fence from Porter. Macy came up with the clutch, two-out single to score Williams.
Bash continued his impressive and powerful season at the plate with his 10th home run of the season, with 16 standing as the CBU single-season record in the NCAA era (2014-18). The two-run homer scored Bell, who reached on a one-out single.
The Lancers put up a run for the third inning in a row in the fourth and did a ton of damage in doing so, scoring five runs and sending 10 batters to the plate. Four-straight hits started the inning on singles from Williams, Porter, a Macy double and Angelo Capolupo bunt single starting things out. Macy scored two with his double and Bell lifted a three-run homer to left field to cap the five-run outburst for an 8-0 lead near the halfway point of the game.
Bell put himself on cycle watch when he tripled to lead off the bottom of the sixth. A Bash single scored Bell and then Ryan Mota crushed a two-run bomb to left field. The Lancers' weren't done and a two-out single from Nick Plaia and triple from Macy gave CBU a 12-0 cushion going into the seventh.
Two more runs came home in the eighth for the Lancers, with their substitutes doing most of the damage. Billy Rockefeller started things out with a leadoff walk, while and error and Macy single loaded the bases with no outs. Tanner Amaral then logged the first RBI of his career with a sacrifice fly to left field. Garrett Dabney then drove in the 14th and final run of the game when he sliced an RBI single to center field.
Valerio took a no-hitter into the fourth inning and retired the Eagles in order in the second, third, fifth and sixth innings.
"My mindset was, since our offense was rolling hot, to get a 15 pitch or less inning and get us back in the dugout so we could keep hitting," Valerio said. "I felt like my velocity wasn't there, but when you have location that really doesn't matter. I was just throwing strikes and throwing the ball where I wanted to."
