HILO, Hawaii – An offensive explosion in the fifth inning led California Baptist University to a win in game one of a PacWest series ending doubleheader at Hawaii Hilo on Saturday.
It got the Lancers the series split, with an 8-1 in the day's opener and then a 1-0, walk-off loss in the finale. CBU moves to 15-7, 8-4 in the PacWest and Hawaii Hilo improves to 9-11, 5-7.
CBU returns to the mainland to kick off a 12-game home stand next week. It starts with four games versus Point Loma, with the PacWest series beginning with 6 p.m. games on Thursday and Friday and concluding with a doubleheader Saturday at noon at Totman Stadium.
A six-run fifth inning was the key to CBU's win in game one Saturday. The Lancers started the inning with eight-straight hits. Harrison Spohn, Angelo Capolupo and Billy Rockefeller logged three singles to start things off, with Rockefeller's bloop single in shallow center scoring the first run of the inning.
Glenn singled in another run, Bash doubled in the next, Bell drove in two more with a single and a Ryan Williams bunt single all came before UHH recorded the first out of the inning on a sacrifice bunt from Luke Navigato. A sacrifice fly from Bryce Macy capped the scoring at six in the inning for an 8-1 lead that did not change the rest of the way.
Solo homers from Bash and Glenn in the first and third innings scored CBU's first two runs of the game. Bell was 3-for-5 with two runs batted in and a run scored in the game, while Williams was also 3-for-5. Glenn, and Bash both had two two hits, two runs and two RBIs in the contest.
Bash earned his fifth win of the season on the mound by throwing 8.1 innings of one-run ball. He struck out six and walked just one. Angel Delgado recorded the final two outs of the game.
Andrew Bernstein threw 4.1 shutout innings in the series finale. He struck out one and allowed just three hits and no walks.
CBU's defense helped keep the Vulcans quiet for most of the game. They lead off of the second with a single, but two great plays in the field kept the game scoreless.
Glenn started things out by fielding a hard-hit ball to first and throwing to second base to cut down the lead runner on the fielder's choice. On the next play, third baseman Spohn made a great diving stop on a ball headed through the left side, came up and then just got the batter at first.
UHH's almost scored in the bottom of the sixth when it put a runner on second with one out. Spohn then nabbed a hard shot to third, tagged the Vulcan trying to go by him and then fired to first base for the unconventional double play to end the inning.
The Vulcans did score the one and only run in the eighth inning on three hits and an error.
