HARVARD BOX SCORE
MARIST BOX SCORE
LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Through four tough games against top-ranked opponents, California Baptist University has shown little separates the Lancers and their top-25 counterparts and even ended the weekend at the LMU Invitational with a 10-5 win over No. 23 Marist.
Annie Eubanks and Kira O'Donell powered CBU to the win over the Red Foxes. Eubanks was amazing, with four goals, three assists, five steals and four drawn exclusions. O'Donell added three goals, two assists and two steals in the win.
Earlier in the day, 24h ranked CBU held No. 22 Harvard in check but came up just short in a 7-5 loss before rebounding against Marist on Saturday at Loyola Marymount's Burns Aquatics Center. The Lancers improve to 13-12, while Harvard moves to 11-10 and Marist to 11-14.
CBU has a week off from games, resuming Golden Coast Conference play with a home game against University of the Pacific next Saturday at noon at the Lancer Aquatics Center. The Lancers then host Azusa Pacific the following Wednesday at 4 p.m.
The Lancers got off to a quick start against Marist, scoring five of the first six goals and holding the Red Foxes to one goal in the first 19 minutes of the game. Grace Ramirez was a big reason for that with nine saves and a steal.
O'Donell and Eubanks both scored less than two minutes into the game for a 2-0 lead. Marist cut its deficit to one, but Krista Krantz restored the two-goal lead, with a goal in the final nine seconds of the first quarter.
Eubanks scored the only goal of the second quarter for a 4-1 Lancer lead at halftime, and Pua Wong scored first in the second half for a 5-1 cushion with 14:24 remaining in the game. Lizette Perez also had three assists in the game, while Madison Gonzales added a goal, assist and drawn ejection, as well.
Marist managed to cut its deficit all the way down to two, with 1:18 left in the third quarter. Goals from Eubanks and Gonzales and then two-straight from O'Donell ended any hopes of a Red Fox comeback and expanded the lead back to 10-4 with three minutes left.
Senior Allie Coleman led CBU against Harvard with four of her team's five points and three steals. Even so, Harvard took a 3-1 lead 27 seconds into the second quarter and then expanded its lead to four, 6-2, with 14 minutes left in regulation. The Lancers showed no quit and cut within two goals twice.
Goals from Vickie Ochoa and Coleman made it a 6-4 deficit with 1:23 left in the third quarter and Jocelyn Schwegler scored to make it 7-5 with 6:51 to play. Both defenses locked in down the stretch and did not let in another goal the rest of the way.
Ramirez logged nine saves and two steals in goal, while Wong and Maddie Meza also scored in the contest. Coleman assisted on three other goals for her four points and three steals.
