Lancer Rally Falls Short

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – A ninth-inning comeback fell just short for California Baptist University in its PacWest series opener with Point Loma, a 2-0 loss, on Wednesday at Totman Stadium.
The 20th-ranked Lancers are now 15-8, 8-5 in the PacWest and the Sea Lions improve to 15-11, 11-6. There is a one-day break between games, with rain in Thursday's forecast. Game two will be played Friday at 6 p.m. and the series finale is a noon doubleheader on Saturday.
The Sea Lions took their 2-0 lead into the bottom of the ninth, but had to sweat it out after a lead-off single from John Glenn on a 1-2 pitch. Andrew Bash presented the tying run when he came to the plate in the next at-bat.
Bash turned on a 1-0 pitch and nearly tied the game with a drive to left field, but the PLNU fielder made the catch on the warning track with just enough room in front of the fence for the first out of the inning.
The Lancers did not give up and a one-out single through the left side from Tommy Bell put two runners aboard. PLNU brought on its closer and secured the win with consecutive outs to end the rally there, though.
Glenn went 2-for-4 in the loss for CBU, which also received hits from Ryan Williams, Ryan Mota and Luke Navigato in the loss.
CBU's bullpen pitchers: Angel Delgado, Brody Robinson, Morgan Earman and Jacob McCarvel held PLNU scoreless in the final four innings. Delgado gave up a hit, a walk and struck out three over 2.1 innings. The Sea Lions scored both of their runs in the first five frames on a solo homer and then on a passed ball.
