RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- Offense came early and often for California Baptist University as it evened up its PacWest series with Point Loma on a 15-4 win over the Sea Lions at Totman Stadium Friday night.
The 20th-ranked Lancers improve to 16-8 and 9-5 in the PacWest, while PLNU drops to 15-12, 10-7 in what is shaping up to be a matchup for third place in the conference this week. CBU and the Sea Lions play two more games on Saturday in a noon doubleheader.
There were offensive performances to note all over the place for the Lancers. John Glenn went 4-for-5 with three runs scored and a run batted in, while Andrew Bash was 3-for-5 with two home runs and five RBIs. Ryan Williams (two runs, RBI), Ryan Mota (two runs, RBI) and Bryce Macy all had two hits in the game, with Macy homering, scoring three times and driving in two runs.
The Sea Lions took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, but things quickly turned in the Lancers' favor in the bottom half of the frame. Williams and Glenn gave CBU two runners in scoring position with one out, and Bash blasted a full-count homer to left field to give his team a one-run lead.
PLNU managed to keep the Lancers' off the scoreboard in the second, but they would score in each of the three innings to take a commanding 15-2 advantage.
In the third, Macy hit a solo shot and Bash added a two-run homer. CBU was not done, with an RBI triple to dead center from Billy Rockefeller and a throwing error giving the Lancers a total of five runs in the inning and an 8-2 cushion.
A walk to Macy and a Glenn single allowed CBU to attempt a double steal in the fourth, with Macy scoring while Glenn drew a throw to second. The Lancers would enjoy their biggest outburst with six runs in the fifth inning. Luke Navigato (RBI single), Williams (RBI double), Macy (RBI single), Glenn (RBI single) and Mota (RBI double) all had RBI hits in the inning.
Not lost in the win was Dylan Stowell's quality start on the mound. The senior ate up seven innings on the mound in which he struck out eight and allowed six hits, a walk and one earned run. Matt Amrhein threw the final 1.1 innings, allowing just a walk and striking out two, as well.
