LOS ANGELES — A dominant first half put California Baptist University within reach of an epic upset. Unfortunately, there was just too much for the sixth-seeded Lancers to overcome in a 7-6 loss to third-seeded and 20th-ranked San Diego State in the first round of the Golden Coast Conference Championships on Friday at Loyola Marymount's Burns Aquatics Center.
CBU led 4-2 at halftime and received a full-team effort in its bid for a big upset, but were put on the penalty kill 12 times, opposed to the five man-advantages it drew. Two Lancer starters picked up three ejections, which ruled them out the rest of the game, including one in the first half, and San Diego State was able to take advantage of just enough of those extra opportunities to secure a win.
The Lancers move to 15-17 this season and the Aztecs improve to 14-15. CBU will face Santa Clara on Saturday at 9:15 a.m. with a trip to the GCC fifth-place game on the line for the victor.
Allie Coleman, Vickie Ochoa and Kira O'Donell all had a goal and assist in the loss, while Jocelyn Schwegler tallied two assists. Maddie Meza, Annie Eubanks and Krista Krantz scored CBU's three other goals and Grace Ramirez led a brilliant defensive performance with 11 saves and two steals in the cage.
When SDSU and CBU first faced off this year, they played the lowest scoring game in Lancer history, with just five goals scored. The Lancers got the offense going early on Friday and scored three times in the first quarter.
Coleman notched the first goal of the game 4:32 into the contest when Pua Wong drew an ejection and kicked the ball out to Schwegler, who fed Coleman for the one-time goal. The Aztecs answered back and tied the game 24 seconds later, but the Lancers scored on three-straight possessions to take a 3-1 lead into the second quarter.
Eubanks scored CBU's second goal, as her shot went off a field block and into the cage. Ochoa collected a rebound off another shot from Eubanks and put it away to make it 3-1 Lancers.
Thirty-eight seconds into the second quarter, O'Donell scored again to give CBU its largest lead of the game, 4-1. O'Donell rifled in a shot across the face of the goal and it barred in for her goal.
SDSU battled back and tied the game at 4-4 with 5:21 left in the third quarter, but the Lancers did not give up the lead. Meza put CBU back in front, 5-4, on a goal off an O'Donell assist. The Aztecs tied the game back up at 5-5, but Krantz lobbed in CBU's sixth goal with 2:46 left in the third.
The Aztecs created another tie, 6-6, with 1:22 left in the third. Both defenses locked in over the final eight minutes, with San Diego State just finding the game-winning goal with 2:08 left to avoid the upset.
