LOS ANGELES – Balance and a quick start on offense fueled California Baptist University to a commanding 11-5 win over Santa Clara in a Golden Coast Conference Championships consolation game on Saturday morning at Loyola Marymount.
Nine different Lancers scored and every CBU goal came on an assist. Kira O'Donell logged three goals and an assist offensively, while on defense Megan Rocha got the start at goalie and finished with 10 saves and an assist.
"Nine goal scorers and 11 assists on 11 goals is where you want to be," Coach Jon Miller said. "We knew we had that depth and extra scoring punch on offense. Everybody stepped up today and the ball moved, we were making the extra pass. The ball moved and got to the open spot before the defense was set and our shooters were ready."
Annie Eubanks continued to do a bit of everything for CBU, evidenced by her stat line of one goal, two assists, a steal, four drawn ejections and four sprints won. Jocelyn Schwegler and Lizette Perez both had a goal and assist, while Allie Coleman tallied two assists.
The complete team effort moved CBU to 16-17 this season and Santa Clara slides to 12-18. It will face Fresno State in the GCC fifth-place game on Sunday at 11 a.m. The Lancers will be looking for some revenge after the Bulldogs defeated CBU on its Senior Day, 6-5, with a late comeback a week ago.
"I was really proud of the way they approached the game, it can be hard to come back after a loss in the tournament, but they were intent on playing up to their potential," said Miller, whose team pushed 20th ranked and third-seeded San Diego State to the very end in a 7-6 loss in the first round of the GCC Tournament Friday. "They did a good job of mentally preparing and it showed in the first half."
Santa Clara came out and scored the first goal of the game a minute, 10 seconds into the contest, but the Lancers scored the next seven goals for a commanding 7-1 lead about halfway through the second quarter.
It was a much different story than when CBU first faced the Broncos in February this year, with the Lancers nabbing a tight 7-6 win in Santa Clara. Schwegler, a senior, said this young team is much different than it was earlier in the year.
"We have had so much time to work as a team, that first game was in the beginning of the season and this is the championship season so we are all in a groove," Schwegler said of the difference between games one and two with the Broncos. "We came out and started fast and went all out all four quarters."
Twenty-five seconds after the Broncos' goal, O'Donell got CBU on the board with a goal from the perimeter off Schwegler's assist. Pua Wong gave the Lancers their first lead with a goal just outside two-meter off an O'Donell pass. Jaclyn Myers and Krista Krantz would both score before the quarter would end, making it 4-1 Lancers going into the second quarter. Krantz just got the goal in before the buzzer sounded, beating the goalie near post.
O'Donell scored consecutive goals to start the second quarter and Eubanks notched her goal for a 7-1 Lancer cushion. The Broncos battled back to a three-goal deficit, 7-4, with 3:49 left in the third quarter after CBU made mass substitutions.
Consecutive Lancer goals from Schwegler and Perez helped put the game away for good, as they took a 9-4 lead into the fourth quarter. Vickie Ochoa and Katie Quon both got on the board in the fourth quarter to cap the scoring.
Katie Fugit also had an assist and two steals on Saturday for CBU, which also received an assist from Amy Bideshi and Madison Gonzales.
Sunday's fifth-place game in the GCC Championships versus 25th-ranked Fresno State will be the final collegiate game for five Lancers seniors: Schwegler, Eubanks, Myers, Coleman and Bideshi.
"It's kind of weird because I don't really feel like it's the last few games of my career, but I am sure I will feel it at the end of the last game," Schwegler said. "It just feels like another tournament; it's fun to play with my team."
