CBU Bids Emotional Farewell to 2018

It earned the Lancers a rematch with third-seeded UC San Diego in the evening, but the 14th-ranked Tritons came away with a tight 5-3 win to end CBU's season and its run in Division II. UCSD improves to 41-15 and will face Azusa Pacific in the regional championship round Monday at noon, with an if-necessary game later that day if the Cougars win.
The Lancers finish with a 35-19 record, as they end their five years of D-II membership with five 30-plus win, four with at least 35 wins and a perfect five-for-five in postseason appearances. CBU was the only team in the West Region to make the playoffs in each of the last five years.
"I am very proud of the fact we're the only team that's made it the last five years. It is frustrating we could never make it out of the [regional] tournament," Coach Gary Adcock said. "I used to always think you could outwork people, just outwork them all and get to the national championship, but I think you have to have some breaks, too… We put ourselves in position all five years and we just came up short."
It was an emotional goodbye to not only another fantastic season of baseball at CBU, but to 10 influential Lancer seniors, the PacWest and to Division II baseball in general. The Lancers will begin their transition to the Western Athletic Conference and Division I next year.
"There are a lot of leaders in this senior class, but these guys made it all four years and they made it easy for me as a coach," Adcock said. "They led from within and I could not be more proud of them."
Adcock identified D.J. Porter as leader within the group of 10 seniors that also included Dylan Stowell, Brody Robinson, Morgan Earman, Angel Delgado, Tommy Bell, Ryan Williams, Bryce Macy, Andrew Bernstein and Garrett Dabney.
"I am beyond grateful for everything I have gained and been a part of here at CBU," Porter said. "I couldn't ask for anything more.
"I take a lot of pride in wearing CBU on my chest because there's a lot of integrity in the program, there's a lot of consistency, hard workers and the coaching staff trusts in what they do."
Offense ruled in CBU's opener Saturday morning with Cal State Monterey Bay, as the Lancers set a program record for runs scored in an NCAA Regional game in a 17-10 win. It also marked the fourth time over the last three years CBU has scored 10 runs or more in the playoffs, as the regular-season California Collegiate Athletic Association champion and 17th-ranked Otters end the year with a 39-18 record.
Both teams combined for 31 hits, with the Lancers leading the way with 17 in all. Six players logged multiple hits for CBU, with Harrison Spohn (3-for-4) and John Glenn (3-for-6) both logging three each, while Spohn added two runs batted in, a double, triple and Glenn chipped in three runs and two doubles. Luke Navigato (two runs, RBI) and Angelo Capolupo (two RBIs) both went 2-for-5, while Andrew Bash (two RBIs) and Tommy Bell (four RBIs, two runs) both went 2-for-6.
Justin Montgomery earned his second win of the tournament by throwing the final 4.1 innings. He gave up four hits, two runs and three walks and struck out nine in his second appearance in three days.
Both offenses wasted no time in the day's opener. Three errors and a Glenn double helped CBU race out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first. Cal State Monterey Bay's potent lineup kept things interesting. The Otters cut their deficit in half with a two-run homer in the bottom of the first.
The Lancers tacked on three more runs in the second inning. Singles from Capolupo, Navigato and a walk to Nick Plaia (four runs) loaded the bases with one out. Bash scored the first run of the frame with a single to left, and Bell plated two more runs with a double to right.
Three more runs scored in the fourth for CBU, as it increased its lead to 10-6. Singles from Bash, Glenn, hit by a pitch and two errors in the inning helped the Lancers score all of their runs in the inning. The Otters fought all the way back within 10-8 with two runs in the fifth.
The hits kept on coming for the Lancers, though, and they scored four in the sixth for its biggest lead of the game, 14-8. Glenn doubled and Ryan Williams were hit by a pitch to lead off before Spohn sent an RBI single up the middle. A pinch-hit, full-count walk to Porter loaded the bases and Capolupo doubled in two runs and a sacrifice fly from Navigato scored the fourth run of the inning.
Two more CBU runs scored in the seventh on a passed ball and Bryce Macy solo home run. Williams and Spohn set the table with a single and double, respectively. Bell added another insurance run with a two-out RBI single for a 17-8 lead in the eighth before CSUMB capped the scoring with two runs in the eighth.
In the final game of the day, the Lancers scored first for the fourth time in as many games of the regional, with a two-run first inning against UC San Diego. A walk to Plaia and Bell single put two Lancers on with one out, and Bash scored Plaia with a deep fly ball to the fence in right center field. Spohn delivered the second run with a clutch, two-out RBI single.
UC San Diego chipped away at the lead until it took a 3-2 upper hand with a run in the second and two more in the third. True freshman Jorge Valerio got his first postseason start and allowed just two earned runs, as he danced around six hits, four walks and struck out five over 5.1 innings.
Matt Amrhein gave the Lancers 3.1 great innings of relief on the mound. He gave up just two hits, two runs and struck out six. He retired the first eight batters he faced, with both Triton hits coming in the top of the ninth, including a two-run homer that gave UCSD the insurance it needed.
Billy Rockefeller hit a two-out, opposite-field home run to left field in the bottom of the ninth, but the Tritons got the final out to hold for the 5-3 win.
