KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A fantastic performance by senior Jordan Heading that included 23 points on 10-of-15 shooting from the field along with five rebounds and two assists was not enough as California Baptist fell 84-68 at Kansas City on Thursday night.
CBU opened up the game with a 12-0 run after UMKC scored the opening basket to take an early lead after the first four minutes of the contest. Junior Jeremy Smith connected on two three pointers during the run, as the Lancers looked to be getting out the gates with a strong start. CBU built a 10-point advantage with the score at 16-6 with 14:12 on the clock.
UMKC responded though going on a 22-5 run over the next eight minutes to make it 28-21 with 6:25 left in the first half. CBU's Smith struck once again from beyond the arc to stop the run as the Lancers went on a 10-3 run to tie the game at 31-31 with a little over a minute to play in the first stanza. UMKC held a 35-31 lead at the break.
The Kangaroos opened up the second half with the first basket and took control of the game out scoring the Lancers 36-16 in a 12-minute span making it 71-47 with 8:03 left in the contest. CBU did not back down, though, and put together a late run that made things interesting toward the end. The Lancers went on a 14-3 run to make it 78-66 with just over two minutes remaining. However, it was not enough as UMKC held for the 84-68 victory.
Smith finished with 11 points with three treys, along with two assists. Sophomore Mike Henn added nine points and a game-high eight rebounds. Junior De'jon Davis tallied nine points and seven rebounds.
Milan Acquaah, the leading scorer in the WAC at 22.9 points per game, was held without a field goal until he made a three pointer at the 17:29 mark of the second half. He finished with a season-low eight points. Acquaah has scored 20 or more points in 12-of-16 games played this season.
Brandon McKissic and Jordan Giles each scored 17 points for UMKC.
CBU is now 9-7 overall and 1-2 in league play. UMKC has won seven of their last 11 games and is 7-10 overall and 2-0 in the WAC.
The Lancers will return to action on Saturday at Chicago State.
