Lancers Secure Thrilling Double Overtime Victory

RIVERSIDE -- The California Baptist women's basketball team successfully fought an extra 10 minutes to protect their perfect record, defeating UC Santa Barbara 85-81 in double overtime on Saturday afternoon.
The Lancers led the game off by scoring 18 points, all of which came from three-pointers. Lexy Ram (3-4), Georgia Dale (1-1), Ane Olaeta (1-2), and Tiena Afu (1-3) all contributed.
The Lancers trailed at the end of each of the first three quarters, something they had avoided all year, but they outscored the Gauchos 20-13 in the fourth quarter to force overtime.
Ultimately, the Gauchos shooting just 3-for-7 in the second overtime denied their efforts to keep pace with CBU, with Ane Olaeta and Delacy Brown icing the game with free throws at the end.
Head coach Jarrod Olson knew today's game would be a tough one, but saw teamwork and Lexy Ram as key's to their victory.
"We showed a lot of toughness today; it would have been easy to pack it in and feel sorry for ourselves playing shorthanded today. They fought really hard in the second half, we moved the ball really well, and we Lexy was amazing on both ends," Olson said.
Lexy Ram followed-up her career-high 32-point game on Thursday against Northern Arizona with another gem, scoring 31 points on 11-17 shooting while grabbing 12 rebounds.
Ram played much of the game in foul trouble, picking up her fourth foul with 4 minutes and 13 seconds left in the third quarter. However, Lexy scored 22 points after picking up that fourth foul, including all eight points that the Lancers scored in the first overtime period.
Tiena Afu did her most important work defending the much larger post-players for the Gauchos, racking up four steals and two blocks, but Afu's backdoor layup with about a minute left in the game gave the Lancers a lead at 81-79 that they would not relinquish.
Ane Olaeta flirted with a triple-double as one can, scoring 10 points, dishing nine assists, and grabbing eight rebounds. The junior has had a slow start to the year offensively but is getting it done elsewhere for the time being, averaging a team-high 6.6 assists per game and a career-high pace of 4.8 rebounds per game.
Georgia Dale dropped 16 points in the game, but it was the seven-in-a-row to open up the third quarter that sparked the Lancers' second-half comeback. A pair of easy layups and a converted and-1 gave the Lancers a lead with seven-and-a-half to go in the third.
The defense shined bright for the Lancers again, holding the Gauchos to just .125 percent (3-24) shooting from behind the three-point line. In five of six victories so far this season, CBU has held opponents at or under .350 percent from beyond the arc, while CBU has eclipsed that mark in four of their victories, including today (.378 percent).
The Lancers will close out their seven-game homestand to open the 2019-2020 season against the Life Pacific Warriors on Tuesday night. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. at the CBU Events Center.

10 minutes left to go and the Lancers trail by seven. Dale alone went on a 7-0 run to give CBU the lead, but the Gauchos keep using size in the paint to maintain control.#LanceUp⚔️ pic.twitter.com/0DaDj92vEz
