VICTORIA, British Columbia – California Baptist drew a primetime game against #3 Stanford in the first round of the Greater Victoria Invitational tournament and nearly pulled off the upset of the year, but the Cardinal held on for the win, 83-78.
It was the first game against a top-five NCAA Division I opponent in program history and the Lancers showed up for it. CBU led after the first quarter, and won three of the four quarters.
The Cardinal led by as many as 21 midway through the third quarter, but the Lancers went on a 15-5 run to close out the period to trail by just seven.
With six minutes left in the game the Lancers cut the lead down to a single point after a Sydney Palma three-pointer in the fourth quarter. They would eventually have it down to three points with 22 seconds left in the game, but Stanford sank four-of-six free throws in the final 19 seconds to seal the game.
A driving force in the Lancers' result was 17 made three-pointers, which is tied for third most in a single game all-time and is the most against a Division I school.
The scoring effort for the Lancers was led by Ane Olaeta, who had 18 points to go with seven rebounds and seven assists.
Sydney Palma was not far behind Olaeta in scoring and did the bulk of her damage in the second half. She scored 12 of her 17 points in the third and fourth quarters as the Lancers made their push for a comeback.
Tiena Afu was the third and final Lancer to score double-digit points with 14.
Lexy Ram helped the Lancers get off to their hot start, shooting 2-3 from the three-point line in the first quarter, finishing the game with nine points and a team-high eight rebounds.
The difference in the game was rebounding. The current lack of height on CBU's roster, and subsequent abundance on Stanford's, showed up in the box score as a 46-32 split in favor of the Cardinal.
The Lancers will now face the University of Houston at 1:30 p.m. on Friday. The Cougars trailed by six going into halftime of their game against Syracuse, but the Orange pulled away in the second half to secure a comfortable 86-63 victory.
