CBU Closes Out Redlands Mini Strong

REDLANDS, Calif. – Strong finishes highlighted both of California Baptist University's game at the Redlands Mini Tournament on Wednesday.
The 23rd-ranked Lancers scored five of the final six goals in a 14-12 loss to No. 21 CSUN in the afternoon and then defeated the host Bulldogs 14-6 after ending the game on an 8-1 spurt. CBU improves to 5-7 this season, while Redlands drops to 0-2 and the Matadors improve to 4-6.
CBU returns home for an exhibition game with Toronto on Friday at 3 p.m. before competing in Cal Lutheran's Tina Finali Invite next weekend.
Lizette Perez and Kira O'Donell led the Lancers with nine (six goals, three assists) and seven points (seven goals), respectively, and three drawn ejections each on the day. Perez scored a team-high four goals and had two assists and versus CSUN, while O'Donell had five goals and two drawn ejections against Redlands.
In the nightcap with the Bulldogs, CBU started the game on a 5-1 run, thanks to three goals from O'Donell over the first eight minutes and 29 seconds.
Against the Lancers' bench, Redlands managed to cut its deficit all the way down to one with 1:50 left in the first half.
Perez scored 29 seconds before halftime to give her team a 7-5 lead at the break. It was just the start of an 8-0 run that put the Lancers up 14-5 with 2:23 left in regulation.
O'Donell and Perez both scored twice in that span, while Krista Krantz, Amy Branch, Maddie Meza and true freshman Kyndall Burrell all contributed.
Megan Rocha finished with 11 saves and Branch scored twice in the game. Krantz also had a goal, assist, three steals and drew an ejection.
Earlier in the day, CBU closed out CSUN on a 5-1 run, but came up just two goals short. Perez scored three-straight Lancer goals over a 74-second span, which started with 2:29 left in the fourth quarter, to give CBU a shot at an incredible comeback, down 14-12 with 1:15 remaining.
Then CBU forced a turnover with about a minute left to put itself on the counterattack with a great chance to close the gap even further. An offensive foul was called on the Lancers in transition, which allowed the Matadors to regain possession and run out the clock for the win.
Madison East (steal), Madison Gonzales (two assists) and O'Donell (two drawn ejections) all scored twice in the game for CBU. Katie Quon (two drawn ejections) and Jamie Hutton (two steals) each had two assists in the game, while Krantz had a goal and assist in both contests. Katie Fugit also had a goal and four steals in limited playing time.
CSUN got out to a 3-1 lead in the game, but the Lancers fought back to make it a 6-5 deficit by halftime. East scored both her goals in the first half, while O'Donell, Perez and Fugit one each in the first 16 minutes.
After CBU's starting two-meter defender was majored, the Matadors' offense found a rhythm and went up as many as six, 13-7, with 5:29 to play.
