CBU Shuts Out UTEP

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – California Baptist University returned to the win column with a 4-0 shutout of UTEP on Friday morning at the UC Riverside Tournament.
Offensively, Anise Avalos made all of her at-bats count, as she went 2-for-3, including a sacrifice bunt in the first inning, to account for half of CBU's hits and to drive in two of the Lancers' four runs at Amy S. Harrison Field.
Despite UTEP holding the advantage in the hit column, Kellye Springstead proved to be poised with runners on the base paths. Springstead never allowed UTEP runners beyond second base during her second shutout victory of the season.
The Lancers looked to threaten early and loaded the bases with one out in the top of the first inning. UTEP pitching battled out of the jam, though, with a strike out and a foul out to end the inning. CBU again loaded the bases in the top of the second inning with one out. This time around, the Lancers capitalized on the opportunity, as Avalos singled to drive in Cheyann Tucker and Deanna Alarcon to give CBU a 2-0 lead.
The Lancers return to action tomorrow for doubleheader action against UTEP (9 a.m.) and Sacramento State (11:30 a.m.) at UCR's Amy S. Harrison Field.
