Lancers Rally in Seventh for Win

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – A three-run rally in the seventh inning secured a comeback 7-6 win and doubleheader split for California Baptist University at CSUN on Sunday.
After a 2-1 win in game one, the Matadors were in position for the doubleheader sweep when it scored two in the sixth for a 5-4 lead in the final game of the day and the CSUN Tournament. The Lancers scored three times in the top of the seventh and then held CSUN to one run in the bottom half of the frame for the 7-6 victory.
CBU has now won 10 of its last 14 games to improve to 13-15, while CSUN drops to 13-14. The Lancers begin Western Athletic Conference play next week, heading to CSU Bakersfield for three games, with a doubleheader Friday at 1 p.m. and then a series finale Saturday at 3 p.m.
Rosario went 4-for-7 on the day, with two hits in each game. Anise Avalos and Cheyann Tucker also had base hits in both contests. Kellye Springstead pitched in Sunday's opener and finale for a total of 8.2 innings and gave up just two earned runs, no walks and nine hits overall.
Down one going into the seventh, CBU loaded the bases with one out on a hit by pitch to Mackenzie Budinger and singles from Rosario and Amanda Argomaniz. The Matadors got the second out, but Tucker came through with a two-out RBI single to give the Lancers the 6-5 lead. Shelby Arbeiter added an insurance run when she was hit by a pitch with the bases still loaded.
Springstead threw the final 1.2 innings in the circle for her 11th win of the season. CSUN got a triple and single to pull within a run, 7-6, with one out in the bottom of the seventh. The second out came on a liner to right field before the Matadors put runners at the corners with a two-out single.
The final out of the game came on a fly ball to left, as CBU avoided extra innings.
CSUN took a 1-0 lead in the finale after a leadoff triple in the first inning. The Lancers took their first advantage with a three-run third. An error and fielder's choice put two runners on with no outs, and Budinger bashed a three-run homer to make it 3-1.
The Matadors cut their deficit down to one, 4-3, with two runs on two doubles in the bottom of the third and then took 5-4 lead when it put two more across in the sixth.
Game one was a pitcher's duel, with CSUN scoring the go-ahead second run in the top of the seventh for the 2-1 victory. Springstead threw her 11th complete game of the season and held the Matadors to just six hits, one earned run and struck out three without allowing a walk.

Tucker led off the inning with a pinch-hit single to right and then came out for pinch runner Ashley McBay. Caitlyn Lloyd moved McBay to second with a full-count walk and a sacrifice bunt from Deanna Alarcon moved both into scoring position.
