
CBU's Comebacks Thwarted by SDSU

Grace Ramirez played another great game in the cage, as she posted 10 impressive saves and added a steal to keep the 22nd-ranked Lancers in the contest. Katie Fugit and Madison Gonzales led the offense with two goals each for CBU.

SDSU, which was fresh off a 9-7 victory over 12th-ranked Loyola Marymount, improves to 10-11 and 2-1 in GCC play. The Lancers move to 12-11, 1-1 this season, with two more games at home next week against Brown and No. 16 UC San Diego on Saturday at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., respectively.
The Aztecs have been ranked in the top-20 of the NCAA at the end of each of the last 20 seasons, including 19 top-17 marks. SDSU has also won five GCC titles (four regular-season, one tournament) in the last five years.
After Gonzales opened the scoring 1:13 into the game, the Aztecs scored five-straight goals to take a 5-1 lead 29 seconds into the second quarter. The Lancers got back into the game on consecutive scores from Fugit and Maddie Meza.

SDSU used another 5-0 run to grab a 9-3 lead with 7:26 to play. With its back up against the wall, CBU played its best water polo of the day and ended the game on a 3-1 run and had its seventh goal called off after an error at the table.
Lizette Perez drew two ejections in six seconds in transition, and got the ball back for her first goal with 6:21 left on the clock. Perez finished with a goal, assist and four drawn ejections on Saturday.

After a stop on defense, Fugit scored her second goal from the perimeter to give CBU hope, down 9-5 with 5:42 left to force a timeout from SDSU.

Gonzales' second goal of the game cut CBU's deficit back down to 9-6 with 2:14 to play. San Diego State scored a dagger goal with 1:32 to play to end the scoring at 10-6.
