BOX SCORE
RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Over the first half of California Baptist University's Senior Day, the Lancers were hanging right with 13th-ranked Loyola Marymount on Saturday and looking for the biggest upset in program history.
Despite a tremendous effort, No. 25 CBU fell short in a 9-5 Golden Coast Conference loss to the Lions. The Lancers got two goals from Jamie Hutton, eight saves and three steals from Grace Ramirez and had a great defensive effort to hold LMU nearly two goals under its season average.
It was the final home game for the Lancers' three seniors: Madison Gonzales, Lizette Perez and Pua Wong. The trio has helped lead CBU to a 71-57 record over the last five years, along with 10 wins over top-25 ranked teams and to a banner year in 2016 when it went 23-11 and took third in the GCC.
If the Lancers pulled off the victory over LMU, it would have been their first over a team in the NCAA top-15. CBU's biggest ranked wins are a pair over the No. 15 teams in the country (CSUN on Feb. 1, 2014 and UC Santa Barbara on April 9, 2011).
LMU jumped out to a 2-0 lead five minutes into Saturday's game but the Lancers scored four of the next five goals to take a 4-3 lead.
Gonzales got CBU on the board with seven seconds left in the first quarter, and Hutton scored her goals back-to-back to make it 3-2 CBU three minutes into the second. LMU broke the run momentarily, but Kira O'Donell scored her first goal of the contest to give the Lancers a 4-3 edge with 4:31 left in the first half.
Loyola Marymount ended the first half strong to take a 5-4 lead into halftime. The Lions scored the only goal of the third quarter to make it 6-4 going into the fourth. They added the first two goals of the fourth quarter to take an 8-4 lead with 5:41 to play.
Krista Krantz got a goal back when she punched in a rebound goal to make it 8-5 with 4:15 remaining. LMU had the luxury of running out the clock en route to the 9-5 win.
