EDINBURG, Texas – Multi-hit games from Andrew Bash and Harrison Spohn highlighted the middle game of California Baptist University's series at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley on Friday.

Bash and Spohn each had two hits in a 9-1 loss to the Vaqueros. It evens the Western Athletic Conference series at a game apiece going into the finale Saturday at noon in Texas.

A win on Saturday will go a long way to both teams' chances of winning the WAC title. CBU is now 24-14, 9-5 in conference and UTRGV is 24-13, 10-4. Sacramento State is currently on top of the conference at 25-13, 11-3, while NM State (27-10, 10-4) is tied with UTRGV for second place in the league standings and the Lancers are a game back in fourth.

The Lancers were just a few big hits away from several more runs on Friday, as they put runners on base in seven of nine innings. CBU first threatened in the fourth on back-to-back singles from Bash and Ryan Mota. Rory Smith loaded the bases with another single, but the Vaqueros got out of the inning unscathed.

A single from Luke Navigato and walk to Chad Castillo put another runner in scoring position for CBU in the fifth, but UTRGV kept the Lancers off the scoreboard again.

CBU broke through in the seventh. Nick Plaia started the inning with a one-out single, and then Spohn scored him from first with a double down the left-field line to make it a 5-1 deficit. UTRGV tacked on four more runs in the eighth.
