Two-Out Offense Highlight for CBU vs. CSUN

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – California Baptist University showcased impressive two-out hitting to score four runs on CSUN, but it was not enough to overcome the Matadors in a 7-4 loss on Tuesday night at Totman Stadium.

Chad Castillo, Ryan Mota and Nick Plaia each had multi-hit games on Tuesday, while the Lancers scored all four runs with two outs over the first three innings. CBU drops to 24-16 this season and hits the road this weekend for three Western Athletic Conference games at Northern Colorado Friday through Sunday, with the opener starting at 1 p.m. CSUN improves to 17-22 in what has been a very difficult schedule this year for the Matadors.

CBU scored in the first three innings on Tuesday. Three singles from Castillo (3-for-5), Mota and Damon Keith led to the first run of the game for the Lancers in the bottom of the first. Mota and Keith's hits both came with two outs to score Castillo.

Plaia (2-for-4) jump started CBU with a leadoff double in the bottom of the second. The Matadors retired the next two batters, but Luke Navigato plated Plaia with a two-out single up the middle to make it 2-0.

CSUN took its first lead of the game with a three-run homer that just cleared the fence in the right field in the top of the third. A two-out double from John Glenn handed a 4-3 lead right back to CBU in the bottom of the inning.

It capped off a two-out rally for the Lancers, as Rory Smith and Plaia both singled aboard with two outs and on two-strike counts.

The Matadors took back the lead, 7-4, in the top of the ninth. CSUN scored a run with a solo homer in the seventh and then scored three runs in the ninth for a three-run cushion.

CBU brought the tying run to the plate after Navigato was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and Mota singled his way on base with two outs. Billy Rockefeller drove a ball but not deep enough, as CSUN recorded the final out in right field.
