RIVERSIDE --- The spring season is upon California Baptist University's women's golf team, as the Lancers kick off the 2020 season with the SoCal Ryder Cup against Cal State Fullerton on Jan. 26.
The Lancers will play in seven tournaments over the spring season, with the first coming on Sunday, Jan. 26 against Cal State Fullerton in the second edition of the SoCal Ryder Cup.
"We are all very excited to start the spring semester off," said head coach Marc Machado. "We had a solid fall semester on the course and an exceptional, record-breaking fall semester in the classroom with our TEAM GPA of 3.93. We are looking to take the momentum we had at the end of the fall and carry it into the start of our spring."
The one-day tournament will be held at South Hills Country Club in West Covina, and the two teams will square off in match play. The front nine will consist a three-team, best-ball match play. The back nine will showcase a 1-on-1 singles match play format with six different groups squaring off against each other. Each match is worth two points. If both teams are tied at the end, the tiebreaker will be determined by the first group on the front nine.
"The Ryder Cup is a great way to have some fun and also to shake off any rust or nerves before we head to UC Riverside's Event," added Machado. "Cal State Fullerton is always first class and are great competitors. We are excited and grateful that we are able to continue our SoCal Ryder Cup tradition with them."
After the SoCal Ryder Cup, the Lancers will compete in the Battle at the Rock hosted by UC Riverside at Oak Quarry Golf Club on Feb. 10-11. The Lancers will be without Jocelyn Chee at the UCR event, as she qualified for the Women's Amateur Asia Pacific (WAAP) during that week in Pattaya, Thailand.
The WAAP will take place at the Siam Country Club and the champion will receive an invitation to play among the world's best golfers at the AIG Women's British Open, The Evian Championship, the Augusta National Women's Amateur Championship and the Honda LPGA Thailand, which will be played the following week at the Siam Country Club for the 12th time.
The Lancers will then tee it up at the Grand Canyon Spring Invite on Feb. 22-23 in Phoenix, Ariz., before traveling to St. George, Utah, to play in the Pizza Hut Lady Thunderbird Invitational on March 14-15. Last season, CBU won the event with a team score of 589.
"NCAA D1 golf is very tough, and we are set to be playing a solid spring tournament schedule," said Machado. "Competition is fierce, and we know we have to have our best stuff to compete."
CBU will close out its schedule with back-to-back tournaments in Arizona. The Lancers will first take on the Red Rocks Invitational in Sedona on March 21-22 and then head to Goodyear on April 13-14 at the Bobcat Spring Invitational.
The team will end their season at the Western Athletic Conference Championships from April 26-28 in Kerrville, Texas. The three-day tournament will be hosted at Riverhill Country Club, and the Lancers will have five golfers competing as individuals.
Machado finished with, "Our TEAM is excited for every opportunity that will be presented to them this spring. We have a group that truly embodies putting the TEAM first and also our TEAM philosophy: Attitude, Work Ethic, Heart, and Short Game."
