THOUSAND OAKS – California Baptist University closed out its final game of day one at the Tina Finali Invite on a four-goal run, which led the Lancers to an 8-6 win over Fresno Pacific on Friday.
Kira O'Donell continued to lead CBU's offense with seven points on five goals and two assists, along with three steals and three drawn ejections. The Lancers move to 7-4 on the season, with their second win over the Sunbirds this season and an 11-8 loss to Cal State East Bay, a team receiving votes in the NCAA top-25 poll, earlier Friday. CBU will play two more games on Saturday against Cal State Monterey Bay at 12:30 p.m. and Sonoma State at 5:30 p.m.
It took an impressive comeback for CBU to overcome FPU. The Sunbirds led by two, 6-4, with about 10 minutes to play. The Lancer defense shutout Fresno Pacific down the stretch and scored four-straight goals, thanks to two-straight goals from Maddie Schwegler and one each from O'Donell and Krista Krantz.
It was a defensive struggle the whole way. Fresno Pacific grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first three minutes of the opening period, before Maddie Meza opened the scoring for the Lancers just 23 seconds after FPU's second goal. That would prove to be all of the scoring in the first period.
The second period saw the same number of goals, but this time in favor of the Lancers. Katie Quon knotted the game at two apiece with a goal at the 4:14 mark in the second period, followed two minutes later by an O'Donell goal that gave CBU its first lead of the contest, 3-2. Fresno Pacific would find a way to respond shortly thereafter to tie the contest at three each going into the half.
Vicky Ochoa grabbed an early goal in the third to give CBU the 4-3 advantage before FPU surged back with three unanswered to give the Sunbirds a 6-4 advantage with just under two minutes left in the third.
Game one against Cal State East Bay was a very evenly matched contest, but the Pioneers were able to take a 3-1 lead on CBU in the first period and kept the Lancers at arm's length throughout the contest to grab the victory. O'Donell notched three goals and two assists, while Ochoa scored twice on the Pioneers. Taralyn De Leeuw also scored her first goal of the season in the contest.
