RIVERSIDE – California Baptist University secured its first series sweep of the season with yet another dominant and all-around team outing in a 13-1 win over Houston Baptist.

The Lancers used an eight-run eighth inning to turn what was a competitive game into a blowout on Sunday afternoon at Totman Stadium. CBU improves to 5-5 on the year with the sweep, as it outscsored the Huskies 39-4 overall on the week.

Damon Keith enjoyed a career game on Sunday, as he went 4-for-5 with five runs batted in, a double and a three-run homer. The Lancers went off for 17 hits overall, with 10 players logging a hit and four coming up with multiple hits in the game. Chad Castillo had three hits, while Nick Plaia and Harrison Spohn had two each.

It was a staff for CBU's pitching staff, as six different pitchers took the mound for the home team. Jacob McCarvel got the start and threw the first 2.2 innings and struck out two, while Matt Amrhein threw a team-long three innings in which he struck out three. Mason McGarvey, Drew Necochea and Jorge Valerio were also solid in relief.

A bit of déjà vu was in play for the Lancers' first two runs of the game in the second and fourth innings. Each inning started with leadoff doubles from Spohn and Andrew Jurado, respectively, while CJ Masciel drove them both in. Masciel's first RBI came on sacrifice bunt and his second was on a single through the left side.

The Lancers added two more insurance runs in the fifth on RBI singles from Keith and Plaia after Ulises Caballero and Spohn led off the inning with back-to-back singles.

HBU threatened to get back in the game when it loaded the bases with one out in the sixth. Amrhein settled down and got a liner to third base for the second out, and then McGarvey came on for a left-on-left matchup. The sophomore got a key strikeout on a big breaking ball to strand the bases full of Huskies and keep the score at 4-0.

Keith made it 5-0 with an RBI double in the sixth, but Houston Baptist tried to rally again in the eighth. The Huskies got their first run and loaded the bases with two outs, but Jorge Valerio got a flyout to left field to end the threat and keep a four-run lead in place, 5-1.

What was a close game became an absolute blowout, as the Lancers sent 11 batters to the plate and scored eight runs in the eighth.

Keith and Kyle Oyama hit three and two-run homers, respectively, in the frame, while Castillo and John Glenn also had RBI singles to account for the onslaught.
