Lancer Pitchers Limit Toreros

Three Lancer pitchers managed to limit the Toreros' strong offense to just two runs on Wednesday, but San Diego's pitching was just as sharp. San Diego pulled out the 2-0 win to take game one of two in the Southern California matchup this season.
The Toreros were held well below their average of 6.7 runs a game this season, which ranks 62nd in all of NCAA Division I, but still improved to 12-4 this season. San Diego is receiving votes in this week's National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association NCAA Division I top-30 poll, and has been even better at home, with an undefeated at 8-0 record at Fowler Park this year.
The Lancers move to 7-8 this season, and are set to host UC Davis at Totman Stadium this weekend, with game scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday, 5 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday.
USD has been a force in Southern California over the last eight seasons. San Diego has posted six 30-plus win seasons, including last year's 32-21 run, and reached the NCAA Regionals twice over that span. In all, the Toreros have made eight NCAA Tournaments, most recently in 2013.
CBU starting pitcher Chris Burica turned in 5.1 solid innings on Wednesday. He limited USD to two runs, as he found a way to work his way out of danger with the help of three big strikeouts.

Both teams were still searching for the first run of the game after five-and-a-half. San Diego appeared to be on the verge of breaking the scoring drought in the fourth inning.
The Toreros started to threaten with a hit up the middle that left CBU's infielders defenseless, as it hit second base and ricocheted into shallow left field to put runners at the corners with one out. Burica overcame the setback and struck out the next two batters to end the inning unscathed.

Chris Burica is locked in tonight. He strands Toreros at the corners with back-to-back strikeouts to end the fourth inning. The junior left-hander has allowed just 3⃣ hits through 4⃣ completes.#LanceUp⚔ pic.twitter.com/fQ08NQJifR
USD put a runner in scoring position again in the fifth, but Burica struck out the next batter on three-straight strikes to keep things scoreless and end the frame. San Diego finally did breakthrough in the sixth, with two runs on four hits, including back-to-back doubles to start the inning.
The Lancers were still looking for their first hit in the eighth inning and consecutive one-out singles from John Glenn and Jeff Bruyntjens brought the go-ahead run to the plate, but USD got out of the jam without allowing a run.
Freshman Christian Culpepper was sharp out of the bullpen for CBU, as he overcame two walks to throw 1.2 scoreless innings in relief that included two strikeouts. Jorge Valerio threw a 1-2-3 eighth inning for the Lancers, with a help of a strikeout of his own.
