CBU Draws with Incarnate Word In Texas Swing Opener

SAN ANTONIO - California Baptist University men's soccer team made its way to San Antonio, Texas, for the first leg of a pair of Western Athletic Conference contests, opening against the University of Incarnate Word. The Lancers pushed their unbeaten streak to four-straight on Friday after drawing with the Cardinals 1-1.
The CBU record now stands at 6-1-2 overall, with a 1-0-1 WAC record. The Lancers remain unbeaten against UIW all-time, owning a 3-0-1 record against the Cardinals since 2018.
"Incarnate deserves credit for how hard they worked to make things difficult for us, but from our perspective I think we feel that was two points dropped rather than one gained. This game is also a reminder that it is a team game because in spite of the mistake for their goal we did enough to score the goal needed to win but were unable to convert our chances," said Head Coach Coe Michaelson following the draw. "We have a tough one on the horizon Sunday, so it's time to move on. Playing on the road is always tough and we have one more before we finally get back home."
The opening 45 minutes provided few real goal threats as the Lancers denied the Cardinals from even getting a shot on-frame while CBU managed just a pair of on-goal shots.
The second half was a different story as the Lancers opened up scoring in the 51st minute. Luis Mueller sent a sailing lob pass ahead of reigning WAC Offensive Player of the Week Bryan Iliohan who had only the UIW keeper to beat, which he did so with a strong right-footed shot.
The Cardinals would level the score just a few moments later, taking advantage of a Lancer misplay to net their equalizer in the 58th minute. Despite both teams' late efforts, regulation would end in a tie, forcing sudden-victory overtime.
The Lancers had played a pair of overtime games coming into the match, tying CSU Bakersfield in the first, while finding the winning goal against UC Riverside in the second. The Cardinals had played back-to-back overtime games against Detroit Mercy and Dayton earlier in the season, tying Detroit while eventually falling to Dayton in the first overtime.
This bit of extra time would play out to the full 20 minutes without another goal, ending this one in a draw.
For Iliohan, the goal gives him three straight games with a tally, in which he has six total, and eight goals in the previous five matches. He now leads the conference outright as the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley was idle after canceling its game against Utah Valley due to weather, keeping Reshaun Walkes stalled at seven goals.
The Lancers will finish up their Herculean road trip with one final match as they head to Edinburg, Texas, to take on UTRGV at 2 p.m. Pacific time.
